Sorry guys.. I haven't been up for typing it all up.. until now.

As a note, pictures and videos will be available when the people who took them get them to me. And when I get them, I'll post them here.

Nogi:

Warmed up doing some flow drills. Focused on breathing deep before the match and staying relaxed. Last comp. I was a nervous wreck.

Match 1 - I walk out, crack a joke to the ref, tie my shorts and generally make it seem like I don't even care. The guy across from me is HUGE. My buddy Stuart looks at him and loudly goes "PFFFFFFFFT. Easy..."

Jump Guard. He passes to half guard. I try a few sweeps. He tries to can opener me from half guard. Move to full guard. He continues to can opener me. Armbar attempt by me. He picks me up and slams me. I attempt to break his arm in half. Ref stops fight from slam, but the guy's arm was mine.

Match 2 - Jump guard, can opener, armbar. When will they learn?

Match 3 - Jump guard and attempt guillotine (one point to me). Opponent stalls in my guard for 3 minutes. Attempts a crappy ankle lock with 10 seconds left and gets one point for the attempt. score is 1-1 going into overtime.

Opponent is EXHAUSTED and I jump half guard, sweep him and move to side mount to win.

Match 4 - Jump guard, opponent stands and backs out of my guard and stumbles. I rush him and take him down with a nice double. In takedown he attempts a guillotine, but I give the ref and Miguel a thumbs up and pop my head out. Ref gives two points to me. I sit in the guy's guard and he won't let me pass. I'm up 2-0 and Miguel says to just wait for him to open his guard because if he just holds me, he'll lose. The guy holds me down until the buzzer and I win.

or so I thought....

The ref raises the other guy's arm. The ref claimed that he didn't give me 2 points, but instead gave the other guy 2 for the submission attempt. I ask why he didn't fix the scoreboard right away and he won't answer. I ask for an overtime round and he says no. I get pretty upset and Miguel does as well. Miguel keeps his composure a bit better than I do.

A video of the match is on its way to Kipp (organizer of NAGA) alsong with a question about what he'll be doing about it.

Match 5 (for 3rd or 4th place) - I bait the guy into going for a thai clinch. I immediately throw the scissor takedown/kneebar flow that we've been drilling for a while. I nail it and immediately try to split his leg in two. Tap on the should from the ref letting me know my takedown was illegial and I'm DQ'ed. I inquire as to how it's more dangerous than letting beginners do leglocks and neck cranks, but to no avail.

I easily could've taken first or second in nogi. and I will at NAGA chicago.

Note: Nogi and gi were a few hours apart. I should've ate and slept during this time. But I didn't.

Gi:

Match 1 - Went against the same guy that I fought in Match 2 in nogi. Jumped guard, he passed to half, I swept him a bunch of times but he would stand up and I'd jump guard again and sweep again. Won 6-0 or something

Match 2 - Jumped guard, went for a collar choke. Got 1pt. for the attempt. Guy passed to half guard and I tried my sweeps and I hit each of them about 85% but couldn't finish because I was exhausted. I still believe that I should've won but he did a good job of not letting me tire him out and pinning me down. Lost on points.

This guy wasn't in the higher end of the bracket in nogi so I assume he was either competing in Intermediate or lost right away (thus having stamina).

Overall a great tournament experience. Went out with my dad (rest of the team went with miguel to the ufc) and then the team later to the ufc after party.

I can once again show my love for beer, moe's burritos, and cinnamon toast crunch.

Think I'm going to be starting on WS4SB next week or later this week. I figure I have about 3 months until the next tournament so I can spend some time getting bigger, then focusing on strength, then on stamina and conditioning. Although I've heard negative things about periodization, I want to give it a go for this next one. If anybody has any suggestions for something like this, please let me know!

Sounds like you got screwed...twice.

Anyway, when you see the quality of the judging at big MMA and boxing events, it is not surprising at all. Unless you tap every opponent out, you are probably in for a few bad surprises.

Sounds like you did good. You never knew the scissor takedown is illegal? That shit is horrible for knees and it illegal in judo/bjj.

Dude, great job! That scissor take down sounds very cool. To bad the ref didn't allow it. I didn't know that wasn't allowed. And that 2 points thing? Bullshit. Sounds like the ref fucked up and didn't want to admit it.

Sounds like you did well, all in all. Good luck in Chi-town.

Difference is that if I armbar you from the can opener in mma, you can slam your way out.. in naga they can't. It's a great way to open the guard in mma.

It's exactly like this except that instead of the front leg going across their hips/stomach, it goes in between their legs and instead of landing in the heel hook position, you land in a kneebar.

It's not illegial as long as you put your hand down first... apparently. I don't know how that's any more dangerous at NAGA considering they let every skill level do neck cranks and leglocks (all leglocks) and they let teens do leglocks as well.
