John's RedNeck Log (Liftin' and maybe more)

5/30/08
Gonna be doing 20 rep squats for the summer squat competition. BW on Thursday was 203.

2/1/08
Felt I should update this first post, since I've changed my routine a bit now. I'm still more or less doin' the 2-day split in a 5x5 fashion, but I've decided to basically do unilateral movements every other week. Due to my university gym (and the Y I work at some back home when I'm there) only havin' dumbbells up to 100lbs, I'm either gonna do sets of high reps, or, I might have my uni days be more DE style, like 10 sets of 3 reps... or I may switch back and forth.

Also, I'm now 23 and atm, between 195 and 200.

Original First post below

Okay, I decided that I should start keepin' a log on here again. I'm gonna at least keep track of my lifts, but I may occasionally include some conditionin' and fight trainin' if I feel like it, but I usually lift 2 days a week, so

Age - 22 (23 rapidly approaches, directly followin' Christmas. buy me things )
Height - 5'9"
Weight - ~190-195
Reach - never measured

Right now, for lifts, I'm basically doin' the two-day split from the FAQ in 5x5. I usually lift on Mondays and Thursdays. I'm currently gettin' ready to revamp my goals, so I'll update this once I get that. I have joined Bama's 275lb bench press race (provided he noticed that), tho, so that's my main goal right now. Mainly I'm tryin' to get stronger for the next time I fight so I try to be functional and explosive in all my movements. If anybody has questions/comments/advice about my routine or w/e, feel free to post them.

So I lifted today, because I'm gonna be busy tomorrow. Didn't do my normal warm-up of 5 min on the rower because of my wrist, wanted to be make sure I'd get lifts in in case it started botherin' me. Did 5 min on the elliptical instead.

Lifts looked like

Deadlift:
245x5 (did 5 shrugs b4 I set the bar down)
275x5 (did 5 shrugs b4 I set the bar down)
295x5
315x5
335x5 (switched from DOH grip to mixed for this set because after rep 5 at 3:15, I lost my grip and almost dropped the bar). I prefer to deadlift DOH to work my grip harder.

Push press - cleaned bar from ground for first rep of each set
135x5
145x5
155x5
165x5
175x5

Worked on power clean technique with the bar a little here

Pull-ups - I've gotten to the place to do all weighted pull-ups finally, so I hold a dumbbell either between my feet or triangled in my legs, dependin' on the weight.
+10x5
+15x5
+20x5
+25x4 (and 1 negative)
+30x2 (and 2 negatives; My grip was about dead by here, but I haven't lifted in a week, and a little longer than that since I did anythin' for my grip, and my grip is the first to go, so I'm not surprised. Also, I felt really weak 'cause last time I did pull-ups, I had more ROM and did a full 5x5 on these.

Finished off with a farmer's walk with 80lb dumbbells and waiter walk with each hand at 35lbs (first time tryin' 'em). I'm not sure of the distance, but it's not that long. Wanted to get a couple other lil things in, but ran out of time. Next liftin' day is Thursday, squat/bench/row day.

Alright. I finally have some more to put in here.

Started out with 5 min on the rowin' machine for warmup, and then went to the bench, 'cause this competition just got me chompin' at the bit for it.

Bench
165x5
195x5
215x5
225x3
235x2
235x2
235x2

The 235 felt really good. I think that's the most I've ever benched at one time, so I'm happy with that. I'll let Bama figger out where that puts me in the 275lb comp. I'll check my max on bench next week. And I just realized that Thanksgivin' is gonna throw a wrench in the works for my schedule... Oh well, I'll figger somethin' out.

Next I did some high pulls
195x5
195x5
195x5

Then came squats (ATG of course), which I do as explosively as possible.
205x5
225x6 (Lost count here and did one more to be sure I hit 5, then I watched the vid I made and saw I did 6. lol)
245x3
265x3
275x2

BORS
165x5
195x5
215x5
225x3
235x2
235x2
235x2
I try to keep my BOR as close to my bench numbers as possible. I know on some of my sets, my back wasn't parallel to the ground and I did more of a dynamic row, but I can work on that.

Threw a couple flyin' armbars and flyin' omoplatas on the Shirley machine for the hell of it.

Got on the decline bench and did twistin' crunches holdin' a dumbell to the top of my chest. For countin' purposes, I consider down and up to left, then down and up to right as one rep.
55x5
65x5
75x3

Finished off with some various stuff, demonstartin' things to my buddy, like a couple burpees, a set of 10 cable crunches, etc. Ended with stretches and bridges. Bridged 2 ways for a fairly slow 40 count w a 45lb plate on my lower belly.

Very good workout.

I actually got video of some of my sets today. Workin' sets, so not any serious weight, just wanted somethin' to throw into a Church video. Also, if someone has a recommendation for a good free video editin' software, so I dont have to rummage through download.com, I'd be much obliged. I think my folks have a CD w windows movie maker back home, so I may try to put that on my comp over Thanksgivin' if I dont find anythin' before then.

Windows movie maker is what I use. Easy to add music, title screens, etc.

Well, right now the plan is MW. First fight I did I weighed in at 198 and fought a guy weighed in at like 215... Basically MMA is a hobby for me though. I'm tryin' to find another fight when I can add extra trainin' into my schedule, but have mainly spent the time since the first workin' on my techniques and stuff. I was supposed to fight this weekend, but then I messed up my wrist 2 weeks ago, and they ended up cancellin' the card anyways.
