About the soldiers: Of course it is discussed quite a bit in German media. But it wasn't a big surprise for me. Good canteens are rare in the country. This wont be any different in the barracks those guys spent much of their time in. They often don't have much of a choice than getting their food from the canteen. And if it is shit - they eat shit.

It would take me quite some time to find something I care less about than the German Army.

With the exception of helping getting floods under control or other stuff like that soldiers are good for nothing at the moment. So as they are trapped in their jobs they get bored and feel useless and start drugs and get lazy. Normal human behaviour.
The only thing that would get them back in shape would be a war.
But well.... no, thank you.
