The world record is 1:13.7 from what I know.
Doing a time under 1:32 should be easily doable for you strong guys.
Should I use a higher resistance/drag factor on the 500m row?

I may focus on the 500m just because it is similar in length to the time limit for many strongman events (i.e. 90 seconds).

Like doing a bunch of 560lb deadlift singles?

41 seconds for someone who doesnt swim regualrly is fine - when i was a swimmer in middle/early high school practicing daily i think the fastest i ever did the 50m was 29 and change.

I don't think I could swim 50m in any amount of time.

Apparently, my female teammate's PR is 27 seconds.

if she is or was a real swimmer that's about right- there were guys on my HS team who flirted with the 25 range

She swam competitively when she was younger. She broke her wrist recently, so I got stuck with the swimming.

Experiment with the drag factor a bit. For the 500m I would say go with a higher one.
Some go better with a higher dragfactor and less frequency and others with high frequency but a lower dragfactor. One might think that stronger guys do better with a high dragfactor. But this is not always true. Jan told me that some of the best heavyweights on the CII go with a failry low dragfactor which results in them pulling very fast and being able to keep up a high frequency and thus resulting a higher poweroutput than fewer and slower strokes per minute at a higher dragfactor.
But then again you have guys doing good with a DF of 10, doing long powerfull strokes.
Of course the higher the frequency the higher the risk of technique breakdown.

My best swimming 50m time is 29 sec, done at a rowers swimming cup some years ago. But I am not sure if I could ever keep myself from drowning for more than 10mins.
