HERE COMES POPEYE... steel cables for tendons

I used to keep a log here that was your average squat n dead log. I moved 2 months ago to New Paltz NY and have no access to a barbell. I do however work at a climbing gym. So as my leg and lower back strength has probably plumeted my upper body and grip strength has gone through the roof. This log will will be almost all about pulling strength (pullups and deads when I can sneak into the school gym) and grip strength.

Also, keep in mind I that I have very short stubby fingers. This is great for climbing but for most grip training it sucks.

23 years old, BW is 155 lbs.

Squat PR 335 x 2
Dead PR 425

Saturday October 24

I visited home for the first time in 2 months and my dad decided to give me a little present. He bought me a 2.5 inch dumbell!!! It holds olympic plates and came with olympic style collars which is sweet. The knurling on the bastard is intense but needed. That thing wants to rip out of my hands. It weighs 20 lbs even. Real high quality dumbell.

Pullups
BW x 10

One arm pullup, not from total lockout at bottom
BW x 1 x 2 both arms

2.5" DB deadlift
70 x 10 second hold
90 x 10 sec
100 x 5 sec
105 x fail both hands
90 x 10 sec
80 x 10 sec

Did some training on my Metolius fingerboard. Nothing crazy, just moving slowly from mono pockets to slopers to small crimps. Kept it intense but real short, not a real training session.

I am not amused by the thread title... there's only room for one popeye on this board... in fact I may give you an av if you'll have it...

Been real busy with my 2 jobs and havent had time to post.

Bouldered for a few hours. Nailed a slopey v5/6 ive been working on for a week and flashed a few v2s and 3s.

One arm pullup
Bw x 1 each arm, not from complety dead hang, just a slight bend in the elbow at the begining.

2.5" Dumbell
90 x 10 second hold each hand

I was working tonight and it was real slow so I ended up climbing for 6 hours straight.

Put up a 2 finger pocket only problem on a 60 degree bouldering wall. Its a super long route like boudlering problem. Extremly taxing on the forearms since youre holding on with 2 finger tips for a good portion of it. The crux is a one arm lock off cross over move that leaves you completly drained. Ran through that like 10 times probably till my skin felt like it was peeling off. Id rate it around v4.

Planche pushup into handstand
bw x 10 cant get full lockout. I have real weak shoulders.

Ring flys (rings are set real close to the ground so im in a pushup position)
bw x 5 x 5 plus a few shakey pushups here and there

I need to rest my tendons for a day or 2. Im being real careful with overtraining. Its hard though with that DB sitting in my living room staring at me!

Halloween

25 minute run

2.5" db sloppy press
40 x 5
50 x 5
60 x 3 x 2

4 10lb plate pinch
full dead x 2 for a few seconds each hand

November 1

Bouldered for a few hours, nothing crazy.

Havent squated in a few months so I snuck into the gym.

Squat
bar x 5
135 x 5
185 x 3
225 x 1
245 x 1
275 x FAIL!!! crap my legs have gotten weak

One arm pullup
bw x 1 lock out to lockout both arms
bw x 1 bent arm start both arms

DB snatches
65 x 3 alternating arms
75 x 1

Finally got a full one arm pullup so im psyched about that.

I am going to squat at least once a weak until I get a single for 2 x bw.

My little grip workout got cut short on halloween when my sister and her boyfriend came and suprised us. Her boyfriend is a real big guy and grew up on a farm so he has just raw big man strength. He pinched 4 dimes, pinched 2 25s and picked up 110 lbs on the 2.5" db like he was picking up silverware or something. I got totally humbled haha. I took him climbing though and schooled him there to make myself feel better.

5k run in 36 minutes

pinched 2 25s full lift with my right hand and partial with left

pinched 4 10s got it off the ground a few times each hand but not a full lift

2.5" db
110 x partial lift both hands
105 x full lift both hands
100 x ful lift both hands

Climbed for an hour.

That was the first 5k I ever ran in my life. I have actually never ran more than 2 miles at a time. As you can see I took my time. Had plenty left in the tank afterwards. I definetly want to shave at least 10 mintues off that within the next month.

Took the past 2 days off besides a short run because I felt alittle overtrained. Ive been wanting to squat and DL again but just dont have the energy. Im going to stick to endurance training, climbing/my grip and various upper body gymnastics.

Anyone have any suggestions or training tips for the thick db? I wouldnt mind hearing how you guys would train with that. Im thinking some high rep/lighter weight presses and rows. Something I can do everyday and keep the bar in my hand for a while at a time.

10 miles ride on my Trek 520(touring bike). Huge climbs. 1 hour

Push ups concentrating on explosiveness 25 x 4

2.5" db
60 x 10 sec
80 x 10 sec
100 x 10 sec x 2

pinky and ring finger pinch
2 10s x 5 seconds x 5

full pinch
3 10s and a 2.5 x 5 seconds x 2

Tried lifting a 25 lb plate by the hub. Got it totally off the ground for few seconds with my right hand but not even close with the left.

Odd levering with the 2.5" db.

Being real careful with this stuff. My left wrist has been alittle achy. Not painful so I havent stopped training but achy.
