Just like you said, you couldn't lift as much, which means you felt weaker. Muscle recovery is just as important as muscle stimulation through lifting, I definitely wouldn't have benched 2 days in a row unless it was an extremely light weight for recovery purposes, but I wouldn't do that until you get a little more advanced any ways.
