My goals are to build speed and explosiveness and then to lose whatever weight I need to (I'll probably cut as much water weight as possible, too). After that, I'm going to start training in specific styles such as Sambo and BJJ.

My strength goals will be to enable me to do either of two things:
  1. Stop my opponent's takedowns and keep the fight standing
  2. Take my opponent down for ground and pound

I've joined a health club and I'll post my routine after I meet with the fitness orientation guy.

Thanks in advance for any good advice or encouragement!
(a) Why are you thinking about cutting water weight when you haven't even started training?
(b) As Devilsson noted, skill training is paramount if you ever want to step in a cage, especially if you are not amazingly athletic to begin with. So your first step should be to join a Sambo or BJJ club or possibly an MMA gym. Joining a gym and visiting classes with a conditioning component or sparring will also go a long way towards achieving whatever weight loss goals you have.
(c) In as much as you still have time to train besides going to MA/MMA classes, you can focus on conditioning and/or strength training.
(d) Stopping takedowns and taking opponents down has as much to do with technique as it has to do with strength. Furthermore, if you really want to work on your strength, going to a "fitness club" and taking advice off their personal trainers will in all likelihood not help you out at all. First, go to the S&P forum and read the FAQ, including all links therein. Second, read up on Ross Enamait, if possible, buy the book Infinite Intensity. After that decide on whether to follow Ross's approach or a more general strength training approach, e.g. the 5x5 as discussed in the FAQ or possibly the programs discussed by Mark Rippetoe. If you have to talk to the personal trainer at all, ask him to teach you free weight movements. If he tells you that they are to risky or not useful to beginners, never talk to him again. Go to youtube and watch videos on squats, deadlifts etc. to get the form down.
(e) Come back here with specific questions.

Your trainer sounds misinformed. I would save the money and instead read as much as you can on proper training. You have all the resources at your fingertips.
Yeah, I'm reading a lot of good stuff on-line right now. Once I digest it all, I'll try to create the best program for my goals. The CPT (who was kind of hot, but pretty old0 was more of just a fitness trainer, not a fighting trainer, so I took what she said with a grain of salt.

That sounds like good advice, except in my case I don't have a lot of prior training. What I've seen from being a fan of the sport is that someone like GSP can really learn new skills like wrestling super fast because he's got so much strength and athleticism. If I could develop that type of speed and power then I'm sure the striking and grappling would come much quicker to me.

Having that kind of power is either genetic or due to years of training, you don't get explosive within a couple of weeks or months. If you are older than 12, focus on learning an MA foremost and train for explosion along the way. Also, doing a machine circuit will do little for your strength and nothing for your explosive strength.

GSP started his career as a top control guy. He's always had good striking, but he won most of his old TKO fights by taking the guy down and overwhelming them with strikes.

GSP is an underrated grappler and an overrated striker imo.

No offense but you sounds quite ignorant on what it takes to succeed as a fighter. I highly suggest talking to some amateur and pro fighters on this board to get first hand advice/experience. What you see on tv is often misleading and you dont see the intricacies involved. Please dont be the guy who thinks he knows about MMA from watching fights. (this is not meant as an insult but merely as an observation of a new generation fo 14-20yr olds who fall into this category...who wear TAPOUT gear and think they know somehting about MMA from watching the fights)

Strength/Athleticism/Flexibility/etc help but first and foremost should be SKILLS TRAINING. PERIOD. If you're serious about becoming a fighter then get yourself in a MA gym and start training. Many people prefer something like Muay Thai and BJJ as good complementary MAs for both ground and stand up technique.

Fullerene, if you want to train for fighting, I would suggest just getting into a fighting gym right away. I understand you want to get some base level of conditioning in first, but that will come anyway, might as well be conditioning in a sport specific kind of way.

Yesterday I took a day off from weight lifting to give my muscles a chance to recover. Instead I worked on cardio and did 2 5 minute sessions (approx 2 minute break) on the stairmaster on resistance level 8. My goal is to work up to 5, 5 minute sessions with 1 minute breaks while maintaining or increasing the resistance level.

I've got no one to blame but myself, but I'm committed to this gym for a while. My plan was to sign up one month at a time, but they offered me a big incentive to sign up for a year, including a special that added two months on to the end of the subscription (14 months for the price of 12). They do have free weights and a lot of classes, including cardio kickboxing and Tae Kwon Do so maybe I'll see if I can do some of that.

Did the machine circuit again yesterday but then tried to branch off into some free weight routines. Was thinking about trying the deadlift 5x5 routine, but I didn't have a spotter. Too tired (after the machine circuit) to do pull-ups either. Settled on doing 5 sets of 5 for dumbell curls, starting with 15s and going up to 25s.

More bad news on the gym as I checked out the TKD class as it was only smaller kids and a few of their parents. I'll try looking for an MMA gym next week.
