Went to the CMU Grappling Club. Today was advanced stuff day. We mainly reviewed Eddie Bravo's twister and its variations:Most of these can be found in Eddie Bravo's book. (Random Note: I would like to figure out armbar from .5 guard in the future. Yes, he's a sherdoggie mod.) Then we rolled for a bit. My ankle hurts a lot.

Went to an unoffical practice at the Panther Grappling Club. Jake showed up, and we went over a lot of drills:
  • Shrimping
  • Reverse shrimping
  • Forward rolls
  • Shots down the mat
  • Sprawl drills
  • Fighter standups
  • Grappler situps
  • Rolling from turtle to guard
  • Helicopter rolls
  • Hip bump drill
  • Helicopter armbars
We also went over technique:
  • First lockflow
  • 6-point armbar
  • Knee-in-butt guard break
  • Drew's standing guard break
  • Standing open guard pass 1 with opposite-side knee hugging body
  • Standing open guard pass 2 with cresent kick
  • Hip bump sweep
  • Flower sweep from gift wrap
  • Gift wrap from mount to cobra choke
  • Gift wrap from mount to taking the back
  • Back hooks not crossing feet
  • Back Control to RNC
  • Back Control to armbar
  • Push/Pull/Pin counters to grabbing-hands armbar counter
  • Drew screw counter to grabbing-hands armbar counter
  • Bicep crusher from grabbing-hands armbar counter
Woo! It was a clinic today between the two of us. Unfortunately, Jake did not want to roll... However, now I get to heal.

Went to gi-day at the CMU Grappling Club as usual. Went over:
  • arm drag from closed guard
  • arm drag from butterfly guard
  • arm drag counter to arm drag
  • arm drag to single leg from standing
  • holding the back control: get the harness, get your hooks high on his thigh, if he frees one hook, roll him over to the other side.
I also asked Drew to review the twister side control. I have to remember to pressure so I am high up under his armpits if possible. If I get high enough then he has trouble making space.

We rolled for a while at the end of practice. I feel I was having a bad day...

Went to CGS for no-gi mma day. We began with some warmup:
  • pushups
  • situps
  • hip thrusts
  • leg lifts
  • crab walks around the room
Then some drills:
  • get out of side control
  • jab or parry
  • jab, hook, or parry
  • tomoe nage (aka the Kirk according to Casey) to mount
    • finish with 5 punches, 5 elbows
      • uke covers his face
      • put other glove over his gloves to protect your partner when throwing elbows
    • finish with armbar if he pushes at you
      1. hip forward so he can't push you
      2. grip arm
      3. use bodyweight to trap it, move to pinning it between you and him and across his body
      4. at same time, move knee past shoulder (of pinned arm)
      5. switch base
      6. switch weight across his body, move your leg across his head
      7. finish armbar
Then we fought for a while. I didn't do as well as I should have, and I even got tired at the end. All in all, I was schooled a little bit. Off-days suck!!!

Went to SCMA today. We went over the basic 6-point armbar. Remember the details:
  • Grip same-side collar, wrist. I can grip a little lower since I am short.
  • Same-side knee pressures into shoulder as foot goes on hip. He won't be able to get his arm free.
  • Bring opposite-side foot toward his head. At same time push off and piviot as close to 90 degrees as I can. Keep grips
  • Side same-side foot over head. Make sure knee is covering his neck. Lift hips off of ground too. Finish.
Then we went over the "catch-the-leg" basic armbar escape:
  1. Catch the leg behide the knee with free hand.
  2. Stack. Put knee in his butt for support.
  3. Jerk elbow free, then pass to "caught" side.
Then we went over the "God help me" escpae from a triangle choke:
  1. Pull his knee away from my face to make space for blood to go to my brain.
  2. Look to the sky. Get as upright as possible to break his feet.
  3. Drive forward. Let him take his legs off naturally.
Sensei Sonny also reviewed how to do a triangle choke:
  1. Push his one hand to his hip across his body, pull the other one straight.
  2. Open guard. Pushed hand is pushed beyond my hips to my heel (if possible).
  3. Do these at same time:
    • Get same-side leg in triangle position behind his head.
    • Push off of his hip to get perpendicular (90 degrees) as much as possible.
    • Pop hips off of ground.
  4. Grip my shin. Bring my opposite-side knee up. When my knee touches my other foot, throw it over.
  5. Finish triangle.
Then we rolled for a little bit. Still having an off day, but did a little better than I expected. Afterward I visited Master Kim's school to watch a TKD tourney and promotions.

P.S. Here is a funny triangle setup.

Sean, check your pm. Wednesday and Saturday classes are begineer classes, but a lot of people show up. Usually 15-20 especially on the weekend. It is kinda basic, but I like going over the basics. I wasn't there on Friday (see log). Get healthy for the Kumite Classic!

Took today off. The only active thing I did really was mow the lawn. What is this, Team Shamrock? But I needed the rest: Today (5-2-2006) my ankle felt about 66% instead of 30%-40%. I still need rest, but I am an idiot and will continue to be an idiot...

Went to the CMU Grappling Club. Randy was teaching today (logged). Went over:
  • Partner clinch drill (Not a snap down)
    1. feel out your opponent
    2. secure their head with inside control
    3. lower your level to bring them down too
    4. then let them up without changing your level
  • Double leg takedown
    1. off of the partner clinch drill.
    2. bring them down and they get up
    3. shoot
  • Sprawl counter
  • Sprawl and counter with double leg takedown
  • Fake the shot, underhook, and throw with harai goshi.
  • Fake the shot, overhook, and throw with uchi mata.
  • Fake the shot, collar tie, and throw with koshi guruma.
Then we rolled for a while. I still don't feel good enough to start standing very much. Oh well... I'll be an idiot and do judo nagewaza anyway...
