Congrats on the rokkyuu. Is ikkyuu the highest non dan grade? Or does it go up to 10?
Only the kids wear coloured belts at my dojo, the adults just wear white or black. I guess it's a Japanese thing. I don't do judo, much as I'd love to, but there is a big judo club next to my BJJ club.
I actually met a Japanese judoka recently who told me he got his black belt in 3 months. I couldn't believe my ears.

I like the translation of ushiro kesa gatame as "retarded scarf hold". Ushiro actually means behind. I love trying to figure out judo terminology.

Kyu count down actually. In Japan I hear that they have white, brown, black, red/white, and red. OTOH they don't seem to worry about belt rank so much until nidan (2nd dan). Kyu colors were invented in France by Mikonosuke Kawaishi. It seems that we use his system. I'm not complaining as an "impatient American."

Went to SCMA for open rolling day. Rolled with two new guys. Rolled with Big Bill. Accidently kneebarred Greg. I forgot that he only has a few months experience. Sometimes I get into a zone where moves are just instinct. I must be more observant. Greg caught me with a weird triangle-with-the-leg the next time though (first time he subbed me - I'm proud of him).

Then I rolled with Gunter - the purple belt from Brazil Jimbo introduced me to. He let me pass his butterfly guard so he could set up a kimura. I didn't even know that was possible there! :-) He said to circle the opposite direction while passing the guard if my opponent tries that.

Finally rolled with Craig a little bit before sensei kicked us out.

Went to the Pitt BJJ club for some judo help. Geoff helped me with:Segue: The first two in addition to morote seoinage and koshi guruma form Sam's nagewaza requriements for orange belt. Although I have already been promoted to that level by Master Kim, out of respect I still wish to be tested by Sam. After all I first learned judo and quite a few BJJ techniques from his club rather than the Kims. It is too bad they don't get along very well.

Then we moved onto katamewaza. I showed a few moves that I learned from Master Popovitch:
  • High pass.

  • Over-under pass:
    1. Uke starts with butterfly guard. Optionally, he can start with open guard, and tori simply pushes his feet to the floor and begins with pseudo-butterfly guard.
    2. You get one arm in and one arm out (over/under)... seems dangerous BUT...
      • You have the underhooking arm gripping the pants by the waist (or just the waist in no-gi). It is therefore oriented towards his head and helps control his waist.
      • You have the overhooking arm gripping the back of the thigh or the foot of the uke. So it is bent backwards somewhat (around his thigh towards your feet).
      • You have your head on the underhooking side so your shoulder is pressing into him.
    3. Then you sprawl, followed quickly by tripoding back up. That configuration prevents a triangle or omoplata and gives you a lot of control.
    4. Shuffle-step around, then bring your low knee in for side control.

  • Hug legs pass:
    1. Attempt over-under pass.
    2. Uke counters by stiff-arming and shrimping (yaw towards you).
    3. Grip around legs above the knees (i.e. thighs).
    4. Step over into low mount. Keep uke on his side.
    5. If you can't get higher mount, jump over to other side.
    6. Since uke is turned with his back to you, you can easily get a better side control.
Then Geoff showed a few butteryfly guard sweeps:
  • Hook sweep.
  • Foot-pull sweep.
  • Knee push sweep:
    1. You have an over/under grip, and rock backward as if to do the hook sweep. In this example, we have a left overhook and right underhook; left leg is down, right knee is up.
    2. As you rock, opponent counters by sprawling.
    3. You push his left knee with your foot.
    4. Finish with a flower sweep, scissor sweep, elevator sweep or rolling sweep.
Then we rolled for a while before the end of practice. A few dudes were doing random martial arts (really) during practice. If I have time I want to make it down sometime to roll with them.

Went to the Pitt TKD Club. Neil and Ryan showed up too. After stretching we did some standing bagwork:
  • 2x10 roundhouses left
  • 2x10 roundhouses right
  • 2x10 fast front kicks left
  • 2x10 fast front kicks right
  • 2x10 double kicks (ffk, rh) left/right
  • 2x10 double kicks (ffk, rh) right/left
  • 2x10 double kicks (rh, rh) left/right
  • 2x10 double kicks (rh, rh) right/left
  • 2x10 spinning roundhouses right
  • 2x10 spinning roundhouses left
Then we did 2x10 axe kicks left and right each. We finished with forms and stretching. I only practiced Poomse Palgwe Il Jang (video from here).

7-17-2006

Went with Randy to Master Kim's for judo. Ben led practice. It was his last one before he moves away to Rochester. Met Chuck Jones - a black belt who is Chuck's dad I think. First was warmup and ukemi. Then was uchikomi:Then we practice alive kuzure kesa gatame drills. We followed this with some randori and finally ended the day with sumo. It was the smallest ring - about 6 belts tied together - and I was able to easily fake out Randy this time by arching my back like a suplex.

Went to the Panther Grappling Club. Four people showed up. After warmups we covered good stance:
  • Head up. Helps prevent guillotines and snap-downs.
  • Knees bent. Still joints makes your balance unstable and can lead to injury.
  • Feet straight, on the balls of your feet, and hips square. You shoot in the direction of your hips. You want to be ready to explode at any moment and not be caught flat-footed.
  • Front toe, knee, shoulder in a line. Leaning too far forward makes it easy to lose balance. Leaning too far back makes it hard to shoot or counter.
  • Elbows in, fingers cupped. Inside control is very useful for blocking or shooting. Keeping your fingers cupped prevents dislocated/stubbed fingers.
We covered more basics like how to sprawl and shoot. I showed the following takedowns:Remember to shoot through the person rather than at him. Pretend there is someone behind him that you are shooting at. This ensures you have enough forward pressure to take him down. We also covered the following pins today:We also did the following drills:
  • Shoot across the mat.
  • Simon says (with just movement, lower level, sprawls).
  • Shoot through legs.
  • Pummeling.
  • Get out of pin.
We finished with no-gi judo. Good class today.
