Near Disaster: A Story of Stupidity and Carelessness
So, it’s Saturday, March 25th, and I‘m doing squats today. They felt ok, but for some reason I just felt that my form was a little off. Maybe like I wasn’t quite deep enough. So, after I get done with the planned sets/reps, I decide to go for 1 or 2 more at 225lbs, which compared to what most of these guys around here lift, it sounds like nothing. Well, I wanted to go for more depth, so I’m going down, down…down, and all of a sudden, I realize I can’t get back up. Now, mind you, I don’t have a squat rack, just a Gold’s Gym bench I got at Wal-mart that I can flip the catches around on a bring to a height that lets me get under the bar for the squat. Well, after squatting there for about 6 hours (actually several seconds, but that’s what it felt like) I finally manage to bring one side to the ground and then press the other side out to the floor as well, without destroying anything and without being killed or seriously injured. I got lucky, but the sad thing was I wasn’t worried about physical injury so much, at least afterward, but disappointment and discouragement in myself for being so weak. Today was a low point in my log, as I feel at this point like my efforts are going towards nothing. This isn’t a pity party for myself, but this log is for documenting accomplishments as well as failures. This was one of those…

Not to worry, mate. That kind of stuff happens to everyone. You'll come back stronger next week.

I had much the same experience with my squats last week. Worked on my form with just BW at home and am looking forward to hitting the gym this weekend with new confidence. Get back on track and kill it boy!

Thanks guys. Just had a bad day and had to talk about it. Didn't have anyone to talk about it with, so I used the journal. Hopefully it'll help when I look back and laugh.

Last Thursday's judo
My stand up is slowly getting better. I'm understanding how throws and takedowns work, and getting pretty good at off-balancing while still keeping my balance.
That being said, my groundwork is getting better every class. Guys that were giving me problems weeks ago, I'm able to at least hang with if not dominate. I tapped all 4 people I rolled with on Thursday at least once each, and only got tapped once with a collar choke. That was ok, though, because I tapped him afterwards with a nice armbar.
I was really pleased with last Thursday. I will be going down to Scranton, PA in a couple weeks and have been in contact with James Simrell and will be able to attend some BJJ classes. I'm very excited about this!

About the squat-rack: Any chance you could either buy a used one, use a High School's weight room for free, or join a gym (not many people there around 5AM ^.^)?
Other than that, pretty nice log you got going here. I think of mine as more of a journal/log, sort of a place to unwind. Keep at it man!

^^^Yah, I used it kind of the same way. As you can see, sometimes it's strictly a blow-by-blow of the days workouts and meals, sometimes it's little anecdotes about my feelings on a particular aspect of the day. I don't think that I could even fit a squat rack in my room along with everything else. It's something to look into, though. Better than a broken spine!
My wife had said something about me joining a gym, which is something that I'd love to do, but the reason I work out in the morning at home is because our 8 yr old son is still asleep at that time and she's gone to work and really, between judo and classes and just family time, there isn't much time to go to the gym. Maybe when he's a little older I'll feel comfortable with leaving him at home for a couple of hours in the morning.
I'll tell you what, that shit was scary enough to make me realize that I have to figure something out. I don't ever want to be stuck like that again!

I hear ya man, I have a little 1 year old at home...which is the reason I work out on my lunchbreak. I'm scared to even let him be inside of a weight room until he gets in his pre-teens.
My thinking about the equipment is, is that it's cool to improvise power racks and such for starting out, but when you acheive a certain level of strength, then it's time to upgrade your equipment to keep up with you.
Don't get me wrong though, I think home-made stuff is the best, but stuff that could potentially save you from injury is well worth investing in.
