Picked up a heart rate monitor yesterday, my heart rate while I was moving about making dinner was about 70-75bpm, after I sat down for 5 minutes it was down to 59-62bpm. Going to keep working the cardio and try and get my RHR down to the low 50's.

Saturday 16th May

0900 - Spar class.

All no gi, started with some clinch/tie up work, then added in take downs and then continued to the ground. 3 of us there doing 6 minute rounds, two in and then one to rest.

delayed results update

I competed for the first time at the NEGC on Sunday 21st June, the competition has been running for three years now but this is the first time I have competed for a number of reasons. Started out with 5 in my catagory but some one got bored and left before we started ? :S I won both of my fights with arm triangles from mount to take gold in the super heavy +97kg class. All the medal winners were entered into an absolute, I won three fights all be points to be crowned the North East grappling champion 2009. The main thing I was pleased with was my wrestling was much improved from the last time I did no gi, down to all the work I have been doing on a Saturday morning with Lee. Still got a lot to work on and need to pick a couple of takedowns and really hammer them with drilling.

The following Sunday I competed at the first British BJJ Open, organized by Braulio Estima in Birmingham. First fight was against Greg, I guy I used to train with when I lived in Sheffield. Greg pulled guard and swept me, I got half guard and swpet back. I think we exchanged another sweep each but then I was able to pass for the points victory. Even in the British Open Super Super heavy purple isn't a big catagory so my next match was the final. I was up against Antonio Henrique junior who had won bronze at this years IBJJF europeans and silver at the mundials, he had also beat me at the last two Seni's in the blue belt devision. Worked grips for a little bit, established a russian 2on1 but wasn't able to do any thing with it, junior pulled guard and worked for a triangle that was pretty tight for a while, switched to a omaplatta and back to triangle. I was able to defend and pass and was working for a bread cutter choke when time ran out to win a points decision.

Please with the 2 Golds in two weeks and much improved standed up. Concentrating on grips/ties really seems to have worked and just need to drill a couple of takedowns extensively so I can be more attacking. In addition I want to work my guard passing more, especially open guard in a Gi where I some times get frustrated with the grips

Monday 29th June.

Instructor gave me two more stripes on my purple belt to take me up to a 3 stripe, really worrying as it's not even a year since I got more purple ;)

taught class tonight as he is fighting on Sunday, at his request I started with some fitness work, did 15 minutes AMRAP 10 squats, 10 push ups, 10 sit ups, 10 burpess.

worked on some attackes from mount, cross collar choke (wonder where I got the idea for that from ), single wing choke and bow and arrow choke.

Open mat for the last 20 minutes or so.
