Monday 11th

Warmed up with jogging round the mat, push ups, squats, jumps, shrimps, mat drags, bear crawls – bit of an old school warm up.

Covered a couple of sweeps from sitting guard and the helicopter armbar.

Finished class with 30 minutes guard passing, slight difference to normal, person passing would swap to playing guard no matter is they passed or were swept, person playing guard would go to the back of the line to rotate back in again. This ment a lot more rotation of people

Monday 18th August

BJJ Class

Started with Tabata, jumping squats, crocodile push ups, sit ups and squat thrust and press ups.

Worked on some stand up techniques, my instructor hasn’t mentioned any thing (not while I’ve heard at least) but Mondays do seem to have become a bit of a stand up day.

We started with Sode Tsurikomi Goshi. I am in two minds about this technique, I seem to be able to perform it ok but maybe a little slow in turning in and dropping my hips below theirs, doesn’t help that all my partners are a lot shorter than me. Competition wise I think I am best sticking to footsweeps. Next covered a low single, using their collar to try and pull them down to the floor so they posture up hard before dropping down for the low single. Last technique as almost like shooting a double and then turning the corner so you ended up behind them, from here you grab both their legs and drive forward

Finished up with guard passing drill, again we were on top and then on bottom and then switched out no matter who won (swept/subbed or passed). I was swept by one of the blues after I stacked him up and sat on his hips to control him, didn’t keep my weight down on him enough so as I started to pass he swept me backwards. Against one of the other blues I worked some deep half guard, working on the sweep Aesopian shows on his web page. I’ve been working on this quite a bit recently, still need to work on getting my hips back underneath him when getting the leg over my shoulder, feel like I am pulling them with my arms too much. All the other rounds were against pretty new beginners so not a lot to read into them

Tuesday 19th Wednesday

Clubbell Swipes

130 reps – switching every 15 reps.

Forearm/hands were pumped and struggled to keep hold of the bell a few times. Was a nice quick workout as I had lots to do.

Wednesday 20th

Felt tired and a little sore before class but thought I just hadn’t slept enough the night before and a bit of DOMS from Monday’s tabata. Rolled for about 20 minutes before class with Kafri, managed to catch him in a clockchoke which was pleasing as I have been working on them recently.

Class started with guard passing, one go on top, one on bottom and then switch out. Did some guard jumping, making sure you jumped one leg at a time, then switching to a omaplatta sweep. Did the thrusting choke while in some ones guard to get them to open up.

Did one 5 minute round of sparring at the end, and then 20-25 minutes free sparring. Rolled with Gav for the first time in a few months, and probably the first time since he each got promoted to purple. Gav caught in a omaplatta and I got him with an armbar, I felt really sloppy though.

By the time I got home after class I felt sick and had a temperature and felt shattered. Grabbed a protein shake and went straight to bed. My girlfriend was ill like this the beginning of the week so think I will skip training tomorrow for an early night and then see how I feel Friday.

started a new job a few weeks back, it involves studying for a second degree part time and have been away on a course so training has taken a back seat the last few weeks. Quick conditioning session to get back into the flow, going to try and get to BJJ for a class or two before the end of the week. Looking to compete in November for the first time as a purple depending on cost of travel etc
