So everyone here talks about strict overhead presses, which I've never done since they don't really apply to strongman. I decided to test them out and see where I stood. It was around 10:30 at night after a pretty long day and I was tired and grouchy and had a headache. Whatever. Long story short - I'm happy with the way they went, but feel fairly certain they'll be much better next time, due to 1.) increased skill from having done them before now, and 2.) hopefully a better setup (more sleep, more food, earlier in the day, no headache, etc.)
For SOHP warm-ups I did:
Bar*8
Bar*8
95*7
135*6
185*4
Then went for max testing:
225*1
Next I jumped to 255*1. In retrospect, I think I should have done 245x1 to get more confidence, more practice, and burn less energy. I think 265 might have gone if I'd done that. Oh well, next time.
255*1 (PR)
265*fail Not even close. I'm angry. Wait till next time.
To work on technique I dropped to 225. I was able to get three. 1st rep was shit, 2nd was good, 3rd was good but I was out of juice.
Biggest difference? No shit CK, get your fucking head through.
225*3 + jerk
Finally, 185 for technique reps. I was shooting for 5 plus a jerk. What do you know, when you use the right form you get more. Huh.
185*8 + jerk
So that was that. I finished with a rep-out set, just to see what I could get. I ended up with:
135x21 reps in 20 seconds. All strict pressed.
One thing I wanted to note was the cramping in my right leg from squeezing my quad so hard when trying to press those near-max reps. I didn't even feel it mid-set of course, but it was fucking tight after each heavy set.
Any feedback on form would be accepted, though I'm pretty happy with my technique at this point after playing with it last night.
Bodyweight is a little bit to 224.

ghost - I do tons of shoulder stuff, but honestly I've always just been a pretty good presser. My jerk is around 360, bench got up to 565. I think my shoulder stability is really good and it allows me to use heavier and heavier weights, safely.
And thanks, guys. Secretly I'm disappointed. I saw fatkid had a 285 SOHP, 25 pounds more than I did. I Really want to chase that down.
Oh, bodyweight is down a little bit to 224.

i mean all kinds of pressing. i know a lot of the strongman guys here will work up "heavy" on strict over head pressing and then when they cant strict press it, they move up to push presses and push jerks.
I see. Well I do tons of overhead work, but mostly log, jerks, and single arm db presses. I've just never done STRICT ohp before. I actually kind of like it. I'll do it for a month or so and see if there's a carryover to my jerks. I'd like to have a 315 SOHP, I think.

I'm surprised that strict OHP does not carry over to strongman (or did you just mean than no strongman event requires strict pressing). I would have thought that raw strength is pretty important for putting unwieldy implements over your head. Especially with stuff like log for reps, I woulnd't think that classical jerks have an enormous carryover.
