Okay, so all the diligent readers of my log (...crickets...) are probably wondering why I haven't posted a workout in a few days. Well, today I had a jiu-jitsu tournament, and I didn't want to burn myself out for it. Though I was itching to lift, Friday and Saturday contained only "active rest."
But the tournament went well (aside from the fact I was there from 8:30 to 1:30). First off, no strength or conditioning problems, so I want to thank all of you have have taught me a thing or two in that department.
There was a small turnout, so I only had two matches:
Match 1: Pulled guard and hit a triangle within about 30 seconds. Such was the gameplan. Good stuff.
Match 2: Okay, so there were about 4-5 guys my size (165-170ish) and one guy who claimed to be 190ish, but the standard rule with grapplers is take what they say their weight is and add 5-10 pounds. There were trying to figure out where to put him (the heavyweights already grappled). I quickly volunteered to take him on. If I'm going to sit and wait for five hours, I'm going to get my money's worth! It was a very even match. He by no means overpowered me, despite his size. I did not capitalize on a few oppurtunities I had and played a very conservative guard (I stood up every time he got close to passing instead of going on offense). Finally, when the ref said "20 seconds left," I went for a judo throw and as we landed, he took my back (4pts). He couldn't sink the choke and I reversed positions into his guard, but time ran out. So I lost 4-0, but I lost on my own terms. Looking back, I wish I would have been more aggressive. I began the match fearing his strength, and it turns out I really didn't have much to fear. He was strong, but I felt very comfortable technique-wise. I hope to meet him in an absolute match somewhere down the road. Everyone there was impressed with my performance, expecting me to get steamrolled by the much larger man. All and all, not a bad showing.
Because of the unique circumstances, I got 2nd place.
Oh, squats tonight
