3 weeks till boot camp.

21 Days left

Last afternoon I enlisted in the United States military, and I will ship out for boot camp in about 3 weeks(4-3-2006). But actually, I'll have to stay over night on the 2nd in a hotel near the meps so really I only have untill the 2nd.

A little about myself, I'm some where between 73-75 inches (oddly enough its changed from depending on who measures my height and what time of day) and around 265 lbs. Now by military standards im like 60 lbs over weight, they say I should weigh around 200 lbs, however I have a lot of muscule mass, but some body fat as well to go along with it, but however I do meet the required body fat % so I was able to enlist. I've always been a big guy, wrestling heavy weight div, and playing offensiveline in HS, and I cannot see myself at 200 lbs.

When I was first interested in joining I was about ~285, and I dropped 20 lbs of fat and maintained all my lifting and strength in about 8 weeks to make sure I was well under the req body fat %. I usually jog about 15-20 miles a week, doing pushups and situps, and lifting weights in the mornings around 4 times a week. This has been my "norm" routine, and hopefully this log will help me and I am hoping you guys can help me as well with advice of any kind.

My goal being to be in great shape for bootcamp.

As far as my diet goes, I eat as clean as I can, no whole milk, avoiding all sugar as possible, I try to eat good fats like almonds, I take a multivitamin, also take san tight to try to lose a few more lbs, whole wheat breads, lots of protein, etc.

So here we go,

Day 1: After being awake for about 21 hours from being in meps, and only getting 4 hours of sleep in the hotel... I sleept in today till about noon, probably around 12 hours.

Right when I was about to begin my morning lift I got a phone call to help a friend move some furniture, sadly it was nothing heavy... mostly light chairs and table.

So I got back home around 3, and did my lifting routine for the day.

Everything I did was 3 sets of 10 reps, and my main goal is to focus on my shoulders today.

One armed bench pressing, works the shoulder pretty good and all the little muscules in between.
Butterflies.
Bent over rows.
High shoulder shrugs, to the chin.
Military presses, one arm for the same reason as bench.

After I finished my post workout meal I decided to type this up, and thats where I am now. Going to rest for a little bit and then start my pushup and situp routine (Normally I did between 100-200 pushups, and 150-300 situps. What I'm working at now is doing the same about, but increasing the amount of reps per set. For example instead of doing 10 sets of 20 pushups, doing 8 sets of 25, and the difference is very very noticible, and hopefully working my way up as I go.)

I will also run this evening (I like to run at night, so probably around 8 or 9 pm I'll start my run). Lately I've been doing what some people call "indian sprints", where you sprint for a little, jog for a little, and so on. Lately I've been doing this for about 2 miles, more jogging than sprinting, about 1.5 of it jog and .5 mile sprint, maybe tonight I'll up the the sprints to a 1:1 ratio, sprinting 1 mile and jogging 1. And after my little sprint/jog session I just do a normal jog for 2 more miles, totaling a 4 mile run.

Tonight I'll see how I feel, I might go for 5 and maybe if I feel really good 6 miles in total. But we'll see. I plan on updating what I've done today before I go to sleep tonight, so don't worry I will do more than just workout today!

Any feedback or advice on anything or everything would be awesome, and if I'm not doing my log right let me know whats wrong.

UPDATE:

Instead of doing my pushups, helped a friend plant some small plants in the ground. Which involved post hole diggers and a good back/shoulder/arm workout.

Dug 40-45 holes with a pair of post hole diggers about 1.5 feet deep and 2 feet wide. Kept a good pace going and didn't take any long breaks.

SECOND UPDATE:

Up'd the intensity on my indian sprints, instead of jogging 1.5 miles and sprinting .5, I did 1:1.

Jogged for 1 mile, and did sprints for 1 mile. The pace for jogging was around 1min20sec, and the eqaul amount distance for the sprint was around 40 seconds - and I alternated back and forth. So if I could sprint for 1 mile fully, I could run a 6min30sec mile if I could maintain that pace (of course I can't).. not bad for a 260+ lb guy.

After I finished that I jogged (slightly faster pace, 1min speed) 2 more miles, for kind of a cool down.. wasn't very hard at all being honest... but the 1:1 indian sprints were great... I felt my food from earlier coming up (which means I'm doing something, lol) but managed to keep it down and didn't vomit.

Aaaand the post hole digging and the added sprints drained all my energy for the day.. so I wimped out on the situps and pushups... I only did 1 set of 40 pushups, and 1 set of 30 situps... and I'm gonna call it a day.

20 Days left

Changed things up today (not by my choice) and did my cardio in the morning.

Instead of running today I decided to changes things up a bit and swim for the first time in years.

Stretched for about 10 minutes.

Did 35 pushups.

Swam 10 laps, and man did it kick my ass... I think running is a lot easier than swimming, then again my swim form sucks.

After I caught my breath, played some 5on5 basketball for about an hour to hour and a half. Had a absolute blast, me and another guy were the only ones out there probably past 6ft (we were on opposite teams) and was nailing the rebounds, blocking shots, and I landed a lot of baskets, even some 3's.... lots of jumping.

So I guess thats enough cardio for now anyways... time to relax a bit, let my food digest and hit some weights.

Everything 3x10.
Standing 1 arm bicep curl (with upper back pressed agaist a wall to prevent any cheating movments, only the arm is moving)
Tricep extensions
Forearms (pumping, arm on top of knee moving the wrist)

60 lunges (no weight) in sets of 20, and some light squats, 3x10.

Feeling pretty drained right now... I hate to wimp out on my calisthenics two days in a row... going to eat something and see how I feel... in about 30-1hr after this lifting.

Yeah... too sore from everything over the last 2 days, I'll try not to beat myself up too much mentally..

Did 25 pushups and 35 situps, and 7 seconds of a neck bridge.... going to call it a day.

Days are going by fast from my point of view... in one aspect I want the days to go by faster so I can get in and get it over with, and at the same time I want to enjoy my last few days before I get thrown into the hornets nest.

Anyway still a little sore from previous days, but hey I guess that means I'm doing something. Show time.

So far today all I've done is hit the weight room.

One arm bench pressing + Butterflies - super sets. 3x10
One arm bent over rows + high shoulder shrugs + one arm military presses - super sets. 3x10

Zero rest inbetween the different exercises, and very little rest in between "complete" sets, 1-2 minute tops. Feel the burn.

Thats all I've done so far for today, going to do a couple things and will start back up exercising in probably 3ish hours, just wanted to get todays thread started. More will be done today don't worry.

______

Update:

No excuses this time, time for some calisthenics.

5 sets of 25 pushups = 125 pushups
5 sets of 30 situp = 150 situps
30 seconds of neck bridges in 5 second intervals.

Kind of think of it as super sets I suppose. Do my set of pushups - immediately start the situps - followed by the neck work. Rest inbetween complete sets. My pace wasn't very hardcore, but my form was flawless the entire way through, and no failed reps. All together I did this in 20-30 minutes.

Still have some running to do, will do that later this evening. Probably some more push/sit/neck super sets before I call it quits as well. Will update again before going to bed.

______

SECOND UPDATE:

Great run, indian sprints kicked my ass again, and that means I'm actually doing something.

1:1 sprints, jogs = 2 miles total.

I am basically doing 200 yard dashes, with a slow jog inbetween (close to eqaul distance). Sore legs, heavy sweating, side hurting, food coming up(not out though, yet anyways , all good signs of hard cardio.

After that I jogged 2 miles normally. I will admit the first of these 2 miles was on the slow side, recovering from the sprints, but the 2nd mile was solid.

So overall 4 miles, and I feel like it was one of the best runs (as far as difficulty, and being able to face it) I've had yet. Feels good!

17 days left

Just got out of the weight room to start off my day.

Super sets as usual, 3x10.
Standing one arm bicep curls + tricep kick backs + forearm pumps.

Finished off with some light squats 3x10, and 60 lunges back and forth across the room.

Still have more to do today, will update later.

_____

UPDATE:

Up'd the intensity in my pushups, and I can really feel the difference... probably the last time I'll jump up 5 reps, from now on only 1-2. 5 extra situps was no big deal though... would be willing to jump up 5 at some point in the future again.

5 sets of 30 = 150 pushups
5 sets of 35 = 175 situps
35 seconds of neck bridges in 7 second intervals.

Happy I bumped up my pushups to 30... probably going to feel it tomorrow though on top of the weights from the morning.. we;ll see.

I ALMOST broke down and ate a big fat greasy hamburger, but I fought temptation and ate a protein bar and an orange instead. Hooah!

Will update today again after my run.

_____

SECOND UPDATE:

These indian sprints are no joke. Soaked in sweat, out of breath, and hamstrings being sore (the good sore) for the first time in too long.

1:1 sprints:jog ratio = 2 miles total. 1 mile of sprinting 1 of jogging, alternating.

Then after finishing up the sprints go into normal jog mode for 2 more miles.

You guessed.... 4 miles again for my total. And would also like to say I'm not slacking on the sprints, I'm going all out... weither its the first one, 5th, or last. The shirt I'm wearing right now looks like someone sprayed me with a hose.

I feel good about today. Running went good, and I beefed up the pushups by 5 reps and met the challenge.

Small change today in the weight room, nothing too major but I definately felt it. Instead of butterflies did some incline bench, really feel it in my chest.

3x10/Super sets. I don't rest long at all between complete sets, and plus I'm doing super sets so there is very little down time. High speed weight lifting I guess you could say. I did these 5 lifts in about ~20 minutes... thats ~4 minutes per lift.

One armed bench, flat + One armed bench, inclined.

One armed bent over rows + High shoulder shrugs, chin + one amred military presses.

Inclined really worked my chest hard and different because of being used to butterflies... my pushups are going to fun today.

_____

Calisthenics time. Some days easier than others, today being one of the hard days (thanks incline bench). One good thing about pushups though is you can go for a closer grip and burn out your triceps if your chest gets tired, or vice versa. I did sets of 30 last time, so thats my new standard like it or not.

Super set style
5x30 pushups = 150
5x35 situps = 175
35seconds of neck bridges in 7 second intervals.

Not as high speed as lifting, make sure I get plenty of rest between complete sets... plus I'm already worked from the lifting. Because I know that if I'm not parrallel to the ground they don't count... form is the most important thing.

Run will be later tonight... will update after... more sprints!

_____

More indian sprints... man they kick my ass.

4 miles in total as usually. 3 miles jogging 1 mile sprinting. The usual.

I can honestly say these sprints are really developing my hamstrings like never before. Can really feel them getting stronger and stronger... also a 2 mile jog is a breeze after doing 1:1 sprint/jog alternating for 1:1 = 2 miles.

Another good day. I wouldn't be surprised if I lost 5 lbs from all these damn sprints... so much more intense cardio than what I'm used to. I'm weighing in Wed, so looking forward to that. I "should" probably rest tomorrow because Wed is PT down at the recruiting station with all the other future soldiers, the problem with it though... is some days they really bust our balls and try to work us to death out there... and some days we have fun, so really don't know what to expect.

Just got back from the weight room, legs feel like jello. Instead of doing triceps, I mean I figure I get enough tricep work from my pushups for now, I did deadlifts today instead. Definately feel it in my thighs today... and my arms aren't really tired so pushups should go smoothly today.

Supersets/3x10

Standing one arm bicep curl (not cheating) + forearm pumps

Sqauts + Deadlifts + 60 lunges (in reps of 20)

Will update as I get stuff done.

_____

UPDATE:

Wow I couldn't have been more wrong. Pushups today were hard as hell, and my back was a little sore (especially during the situps) I think from the deadlifts. It wasn't easy but I fought through it, and also added 1 pushup per set. Hope we don't do a lot of upper body tomorrow in PT... but we probably will

5x31 pushups = 155
5x35 situps = 175
35 seconds of neck bridges in 7 second intervals.

Next is the run... will update before bed.

_____

Really looking forward to the weigh in tomorrow, I think I've lost at least 5 lbs from these sprints... they are hell. Tonight I was surprised I wasn't getting as winded as bad as before, so I'd say my wind is getting better. My legs are pretty sore right now, specifically my hamstrings, and calves just a little bit. I'm gonna sleep like a rock tonight.

4 miles, nothing different. 1 of those miles being sprints. The 1:1 thing I do.

Which service did you join?

When you get back you have alittle to learn about strength training but since your going into the military i won't hassle you...

Being your size and in decent condition before you go in will help you alot with the mental aspect of bootcamp (i went into USMC bootcamp a fat fuck and was too exhausted "to be a leader," i was just happy to get through it).

Go ahead and eat that fat hamburger at least once before you go in...I found the food in the military to be surprisingly good actually...(except when your in the field of course)...

Good luck bro.

I joined the Army. I really wanted a combat job, I actually had my heart set on being a tank crew member, or maybe air defense (MLRS).... but I'm color blind and the Army offered the best job I think at the time for someone thats color blind. 25C radio (this and laundry was the only jobs for color blind, so either do it or not join at all, I feel good about my choice though, I've been doing nothing since I graduated HS and now I'm finally doing something... I'm 19).... at MEPS they said its a possibility I'll get assigned to an infantry or artillery platoon so I might get my wish in the end, only time will tell.
