MMO's are an easier version of real life. You get much more rewards for the amount of effort you put in.
Most of the really hard core players do it simply because they can. The vast majority of them don't work and are supported by their parents.
I was in a top 10 Horde guild world-wide and that describes most of them. Either living at home doing nothing or off at college barely passing their classes. 10+ hours? When the expansion for WoW came out these people were putting in 30 hours straight followed by 4-6 hours of sleep.
Shrug. It gives meaning to their lives. Isn't that what we're all seeking, meaning? As long as they can support themselves I say more power to them.
The idea that if you put as much effort into real life as you do a video game that you would be a "winner" in real life is ludicrous. Most people will never be "winners" in life. It's a hell of a lot easier to "win" in WoW. You can work 10+ hours a day and never have a fancy car, big home, or hot woman.
I dunno, the psychological factors involved are many. I do, however, believe that most of the really "hard core" raiders (in the top guilds) are the type of people that will be successful at whatever they attempt in their life - if they put in the effort. They are the "strivers" that put in as much effort as it takes to succeed.
The real losers are the ones that put in all the effort and never get to the top tiers of raiding or pvp. They just level up 8 characters to max level because they suck at the game and nobody wants to raid with them.
