Getting a degree online
I'm debating switching to an online program.
After this semester, i'll have 83 credits completed. All done in a traditional school. After getting my associate's degree, i took over 2 years off from school. Recently, i've returned. Things really aren't working out so far with there being over an hour commute one way to school in traffic. The gas is killing me, and the travel time and class time is really cutting in to when i can work my current crappy job and i have no money.
Some of the pros of switching to an online degree imo:
More time to work. More money. Less gas used. More money.
Obviously, some majors require you to be in the actual school to perform the work that is necessary. Like being a doctor. I'm doing accounting. Honestly, most of the time in class is filled up with superfulous side stories that i'm really not interested in hearing. Taking classes online will eliminate that.
I like the idea of studying on my own. I think i will be more productive and i'm suited for it this way.
Some of the cons:
The stigma of an online degree. I've heard some people speak negatively about them. From people who have done them, i've head they are actually more of a challenge than a traditional setting. They seem to be gaining a lot of acceptance and almost every school it seems is offering some kind of online stuff. However, I'm still worried about how the degree will be respected by any potential future employer. Where i'm going will be actual schools in the State University of NY (SUNY) system, which is a very legit system. The degrees don't say "online" on them, so i guess nobody would even know unless the asked some direct questions. Besides, regardless of where i go, i still have to pass the CPA examination. Shouldn't really matter if you have a Harvard education and you barely pass the test. If I do well on the test, that should be the highest statement of my credentials imo.
What are your opinions? Anyone ever take online classes?
