I just recently switched to vista for dx10 and have no problems. It actually boots faster then XP did for me. I haven't noticed any performance drops in my games and everything runs around the same speed. It really isn't as bad as everyone says it is.

Its buggy, slow, resource intensive and crippled. Why do you think there are so many versions of it?
I've seen systems take as long as 20min to do a simple copy/paste, i've seen vista take 30min to delete a 5mb file. User Access Control the new security suite, was actually designed to piss off users. ( Vista's UAC security prompt was designed to annoy you )
did i mention resource intensive?
XP Pro min system req's
233 MHz CPU *
64 MB of RAM (may limit performance and some features) *
1.5 GB of available hard disk space *
Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Vista Pro ver Min system req's This is to run the new Aero interface.
# 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
# 1 GB of system memory
# 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
# Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:

* WDDM Driver
* 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
* Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware
* 32 bits per pixel
Minimum System Specs for Ubuntu Linux OS Does everything Vista does including an Aero style interface.
Desktop & Laptop[107] Server[107]
Required Recommended
Processor: 300 MHz(x86) 700 MHz(x86) 300 MHz (x86)
Memory: 64 MB 384 MB* 64 MB[105]
Hard drive capacity: 4 GB[104] 8 GB[104] 500 MB[105]
Video card: VGA @ 640x480 VGA @ 1024×768

And just for grins Minimum System Specs for MS Server 08
Processor Minimum: 1 GHz (x86 processor) or 1.4 GHz (x64 processor)
Memory Minimum: 512 MB RAM
Available Disk Space Minimum: 10 GB
Drive DVD-ROM drive
Display Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution monitor

Doesn't it strike anyone as odd that you have to have a PC that is more powerful than a Server to run just the OS and nothing else?

I'm still torn. After reading what's on here, it could be that my laptop just isn't powerful enough for Vista. Vista has been nothing but a headache for me. As I said, it's not that I can't get stuff done, it's just that sometimes it takes WAY longer than it should.

I think I'll stick with XP for awhile. I just don't have anywhere near the aggravation with XP as I do with Vista. I've heard from a buddy that Microsoft knows that they fucked up so much with Vista that the new OS is supposed to come out in a couple of years. I don't know if that's just Microsoft hate or if it's the truth. All I know is that my experience with Vista has not been positive.

I just dont understand what was wrong with XP, it kicks ass. Vista is simply Microsoft trying to be cool and edgy like with apple and all of there "look at me Im so modern and hip with my apple".

Soda, i know you got a raw deal with Windows ME. Windows ME is the closest an OS can become to being a virus without actually being a virus.
But you have XP, which is a good OS. Update XP to Service Pack 3 and wait for Windows 7 to come out. Windows 7 is the successor to Vista and should be released in the next 3 years, until then MS has extended the service life of XP until 2014. Thats 2 years after the end of the world! (if you believe all that Mayan prophesy stuff)
Also a lot of people haven't have problems with Vista, and good for them. But many more people have had problems with it. And the cost to upgrade your computer to get it working like it should is outrageous. Not to mention the time it takes to hunt down drivers and debug your hardware/software so that everything works with your new OS. Some software you have may not be Vista compatible.
Bottom line, update XP and enjoy your computer until you feel the need for a new one. IF your feeling that your system is slow, check your hw and see if you can upgrade your RAM. Its the most bang for your buck hw upgrade wise.

Those Mc-PC commercials are so exaggerated. Funny, but inaccurate.
my experience is almost identical, except that i upgraded machines (custom built system this time), so Vista ran smooth as silk from day 1. no issues, other than not being able to use my old capture card, which i run on my old system.

Its just MS trying to force people to buy a new, more expensive machine. Nothing more, nothing less.

Oh, BTW, check out the specs you need to run Windows 98 lol.

I have Vista and my only issue with it comes from having a static IP at home but acquired at school, so I have to switch between the two (it claims that it supports this set up, but it doesn't). Aside from that there has been no problem as I removed all the guff that I didn't like the day I got the computer. However, in your case I think you are wise to stick with XP, I don't think an older system with less RAM/CPU power would handle its resource hogging.

That said, the concept of Vista pisses me off. They had the opportunity to create a whole new OS from scratch that was streamlined and well designed. Instead they released basically their old OS wrapped up in a pretty pink bow. It's infuriating.
