Why are British accents used in movies about Greece and Rome?

Another question would be why I'm so bothered by it. Most recently I wanted to watch the series "Rome" on HBO, but I can't get past the English accents and take these guys seriously. They use British accents for just about any film that takes place more than 200 years ago, whether the British had any connection linguistically to the people involved. Is there a reason for this?

It sounds more "educated." I personally want them to use the language of the time but that takes a lot of effort. Since they have to speak english, its better to use British accents. I think using an american accent in those kind of films would be even weirder.

It must be that or the fact that much of the popular "history" is derived from Shakespearean plays.

But you wouldn't have to do it in Latin to be more authentic. How about Italian accents? Even no accents would be better.

Yeah I guess English in Italian accents wouldn't be bad. How would you have no accents?

It's probably a cultural thing with all those costume dramas the British has poured out onto the world for decades making everything British sound "old" if you know what I mean.

As for Rome the fact that most of the prominent cast members are British seems to me to play an important part in it.

i think it has more to do with a more dramatic form of acting that's filtered down from shakespearian drama on the english stages. if you want old films of someone like FDR you'll notice he assumes a very polished manner of speaking that comes from the old style of oratory.

obviously when brad pitt tries to in effect play achilles as mark antony disaster ensures.

Well, there is the fact that most, if not all of the actors and actresses in Rome are british?
