You might as well just wait. In about 2 months they are Apple is releasing the official app store on iTunes so you can legally get new apps on your phone. Some will be free, some will cost but at least you don't have to worry about royally screwing up your phone and voiding your warranty.

the problem is they are apple designed and you cant just write your own programs even if you are familiar with the OS. So what if they have their own app store, I have a treo and I can legally download free programs made by anybody and use it on my phone.

Obviously you don't know what you are talking about. Apple released a SDK for anyone to make apps for the iPhone. It comes with a complete package to make the program and test it on a iPhone simulator. When the app store comes out, the maker of the app can submit the app to be downloaded for free or to be payed for. The creator will get a cut of the revenue, I don't remember the exact amount but it was around 40% or something.
