The journey doesn't fulfill me and accomplishing the goal doesn't fulfill me. Do you think it is possible to learn to enjoy the journey? Now it is just an endless cycle of goals, going from one to the next, but filling little joy from accomplishing any one of them.

I absolutely think it is possible to learn to love the journey. I think that is probably one of the primary things we should be striving for in life. A bumper sticker summed it up, "There is no way to happiness, happiness is the way." So often we tell ourselves, "As soon as I do such and such, I'm finally going to be happy. I just need a girl, or I just need that job, or I just need more money etc." Then we get it, feel briefly euphoric and in a week or less we are thinking, "As soon as I get such and such, I'll be happy." The fact of the matter is we need to learn to be happy first. In fact, if you learn to be happy first, the other things come a lot easier. I've met so many depressed, destitute guys that just wanted a GF and knew that would make them happy. I think you well know that simply having a girl doesn't make a person happy. That being said, these guys I speak of are never going to get girls because they are so damn dreary and lame all the time.
There is the old question, "Why do bad things happen to good people?"
But a book title sums that up, "Why do good things happen to good people?" Because truth be told, while everyone must suffer at some point, good people that do good for others, and have learned to enjoy the journey reep the most benifits out of life. They are more popular, live longer, are healthier, report higher levels of life satisfaction, more stable marriages etc.
I could go on and on and on about this topic. But I'll stop.

That reminds me of a somewhat recent occurrence. One of my teachers from elementary school organized a get together of my old class. It was her retirement party, too. Well I get there, blah blah, she hands us out cards with a little note and her e-mail address on. So I do what must be done there and head home.
Later that night I decided to write her a letter. In it I said all kinds of things to her, some were true and some were not, but it was all very positive. Her is the response she sent back to me:
"
Dear Magicman (pulling an NHB here),
I'm overwhelmed with the wonderful letter you wrote to me. You've made my "career". You are an outstanding tribute to all that I hoped to do for children that were under my care. You gave me goosebumps (and I shed a few tears) when you said that I had a hand in helping to establish a higher standard and dedication to excellence in you.
Please don't wait for something interesting to tell me about before you write again. Just keep in touch and thank YOU for the memories. (Oh boy, here come the tears again.)
I'll love you forever,
Mrs. Teacher"
After I read that, I thought "One little letter of appreciation can cause someone so much joy?" Before that I don't think I'd complimented anyone in the last 10 years. It kind of opened up my eyes a bit to the average humans emotions.

Wow that is awesome man. Thats a cool experience to have had (especially for her)(that sounded sexual).
Human emotion is fascinating.
Something I have found that is interesting is that when I try to be as unjudgemental as possible, people start sharing secrets. You wouldn't believe how deep of secrets people are willing to share. I hear all the time, "I've never told that to anyone before, I can't believe I just told you." And the reason I bring it up is what you discover is that even the most reserved, or toughest guys out there have some secrets about emotions they pretend not to feel.
Thats just random food for thought.
