Loyalty because of location?
I was just having a discussion with some people yesterday about loyalty and whom you should support. It started with american idol actually. They were saying that I should vote and support for the person from my home town. When I asked why, they said because it's a hometown kid. Then I posed to them the question of why should I support them just because I live in the same place?
It's only by chance really that we're from the same place. My opinion is based off of my liking them and their talent, not geographical location. So then they took it a step further and said something about "who would you support if a US fighter had a boxing match with an alien martian?" I said it would depend on who I liked. Their response was that that made me a traitor. I thought, if winning or losing didn't cause me or my country and physical harm, we weren't going to be annihilated or destroyed, then what did it matter? It's akin to me rooting for GSP vs Serra this past week.
Even when it comes to the country loyalism I asked if you should always support your country. Some of them said you should. Then I brought up Nazi germany and asked them if they would have supported the nazi's in their annihilation of the jews, JUST because they had been born in germany. Silence.
So where do you weigh in on loyalty due to location? Now let me clarify though, if the US was battling some country like germany or japan, then I would stand behind them. I may not support the reason we're at war, however I would never root for the enemy to win. But on the smaller issues here I don't think location should be a part of your decision.

Seeing as you never really know a person on TV, I tend to cheer for the Americans.
Besides, being a certain nationality is for the most part a choice. You can decide to move after all.
When I watch MMA I cheer for US, then UK, then Japan, then Brazil, then whatever.

I have that same opinion, I will never support a countryman just because we come from the same place. Why should the normal logical decision making process be modified by a mere coincidence of heritage?

Yeah I remember when I was a little younger this always used to come up when talking about sports. I Live in the Greater Toronto Area and I used to support the Detroit Red Wings and my friends would just hate on me because I wasn't a leaf fan, even to go as far as to stop inviting me the watch the leaf games. It was never anything against the leafs it I just personally liked Detroit more. They had better players which made the game more exciting.
As long as the issue was never really serious I would always support who enjoyed watching first and foremost. I am Canadian but I support the American troops. I don't agree with the cause but I give them my support.

I've always had double standards considering this issue, I find it lame to support your fellow countrymen just because they're your countrymen, UNLESS you're from a minority
war where I'm from !

Do you guys examine the personalities of a team's roster before you pick a team to cheer for?

"I was over in Australia, and got asked, "Are you proud to be an American?"
I, I dunno, I didn't have a lot to do with it! My parents fucked there, that's about all.... I was in the spirit realm at that time, trying to tell them "Fuck in Paris! Fuck in Paris!" but they couldn't hear me, 'cause I didn't have a mouth! I was a spirit without lungs or a mouth, or vocal cords. They fucked here.
Ok, I'm proud...
I hate patriotism, I can't stand it, man, it makes me fucking sick. It's a round world, last time I checked, okay? Y'know what I mean? I hate patriotism.
In fact, that's how we can stop patriotism, I think. Instead of puttin' stars and stripes on our flag, we should put pictures of our parents fucking!
Gather people 'round that flag, and see your dad hunched over your mom's big 4x4 butt, see if any boot 'n rally mentality can circle around that little fuckin' image."
