Dude. They're so damn good, they're breaking me of my Tolkien snobbery.
I'm plowing my way through A Storm of Swords (for everyone else, that's the 3rd book in the series), and I'm already mad that I'm going to finish it and the 4th book before the 5th comes out, let alone the 6th and 7th. That means I'm going to have to wait, maybe years. As a guy who waited with bated breath to see if Stephen King was going to finish the Dark Tower series, and saw him almost die before doing so, I'm nervous.
After I finish with George R.R. Martin (for the time being), I'll probably finish one of the non-fiction volumes in my ever-growing "to be read" pile. I'm big on biographies, and I have bios of John Adams and George S. Patton to work on.

This is a classic rookie mistake. Those of us that are hardcore only purchase books in a series where the series is already completed. If I didnt do that, I'd be on Book #1 on so many series, it would just be lame. Protip: wait until the series is over or the author dies before picking up the book. Wheel of Time ring any bells?

Starship Troopers was great as well. I enjoyed the movie, but it was very stupid. I liked both of these more than Stranger in a Strange Land.

It's been read. As long as you have something else to read, which there always is, it's kind of fun to anticipate new books coming out.

Current:
Germs, Guns and Steel. A very short summary of the history of our entire species. Real interesting book and easy to follow. So far its been good but I'm only on chapter 2.
Next:
Killing Rommel. About British special forces and their plan to assasinate Rommel. I really like Pressfield and this sounds like an awesome book.
|
i blew through Killing Rommel in the first few days after it came out. if i HAD to pick a favorite author, it would probably be pressfield. that being said i was a little disapointed. don't get me wrong, it is a good read, but seemed a bit formulaic. i think he has a better nack for greek history, but maybe i'm biased since i'm completely facinated by the era.
i'm currently re-reading The Afghan Campain (for what is honestly probably the 5th time) but i'll have to pick up Guns, Germs, and Steel since everyone keeps mentioning it.
