for undergrads at a university

so i just transfered as a junior into UC Irvine and im looking into the future to a grad school such as USC or UCLA...I was told that besides good grades and letters, its a good idea to join to some clubs, sports, or frats. So for all you fellow students out there, what kinds of clubs or frats , or sports are u in and would u recomend.. Im thinking of joining the psychology club(my major) and maybe the wresting club next semester....im also thinking of joining a frat...does anyone have any experience with whats expected of you in a frat and prices and parties and shit like that?

If you're looking for grad school, get good grades, get to know professors so you get good letters of recommendation, get some real world experience, and if you're going to join a couple clubs....try to make a meaningful contribution in one. Hold an office. Be president, or treasurer, or secretary. But a laundry list of activities without any leadership positions won't do a ton to get you into grad school

And I'm an ex-frat dude here. if your primary motivation for joining a frat is to pad your resume and grad school apps....I cannot stress how bad an idea that is.

I went to PSU, and the cost of living there versus in CA is completely different....but living in our house was approximately $3500/semester with another $300 per for social dues aka beer and party money.

What is expected of you in a frat? To make friends with the kids in your fraternity and not be a screw up. Anything above and beyond that is icing on the cake.

I was in a fraternity with one of the larger houses at Penn State so I am not sure what our room and board was compared to the university average.

You don't have to live in the house to be in the frat, and lots of seniors from my pledge class moved out their last year because you can grow out of it (it's loud, it's not the cleanest environment, etc.)....but, why would you want to join a fraternity and not live with everyone for at least a year or two?

At the end of the day, grades, a good GRE score, and letters of support from your profs are the only thing that matter.

People that tell you otherwise are lying, or don't know how the system works.

With that being said, get the most of your uni experience (clubs etc), as long as it doesn't come at the expense of your grades.

lol, who told you that? I seriously doubt any extracurricular activities will help get you into grad school outside of community service or student honor groups. This isn't like high school. Grad school is a serious ordeal and they want to see that you can commit to 3-8 more years of far-more intense studies, which they'll measure by your GPA and professor recommendations, rather than the intramural sport leagues you've joined.

Join whatever clubs you want, but keep in mind that they'll only make up a minute part of your transcript.

I transfered to a state school in California as a junior and needed to make friends fast. So I joined a fraternity and it was one of the best things I've ever done. I came to school with one friend and now I have 120 people I can genuinely call friends. And the connections to the sororities are great!
