I work with mentally handicapped adults. I have two uncles with mental disablities. I have always disliked the use of the word 'retard' as a generic insult. It is a condition that they have no control over. It is similar, in my eyes, to the 'n' word. Insensitive, insulting and completely unnecessary.

To me people trying to over-sympathize is even more insulting. Like when I was a kid I was diagnosed with ADD. The doctor talked in this fake, overly nice tone, and it was just insulting as hell.

"It's ok, there's nothing wrong with you. We're just here to help out out, ok."

To me, I interpret that type of attitude as

"I'm being super nice to you, because you are so fucked up that it would be insulting not to be super nice. How dare I insult someone in YOUR position"

I actually agree. Next to Heath Ledger, Downey's performance in Tropic Thunder is the second best I have seen this year. He will never get a nomination for a movie like that though.
