Theory of the imploding universe...

I worked with a guy who is staff in the physics dept @ URI and has several US patents, but he has a tendency to outsmart himself. Anyway he was telling me about his pet theory of the "imploding universe". He maintains that light is stationary, that the reason it seems to travel at 186,000 MPS is because the universe is collapsing at that rate - Hawking and everyone else are just seeing the big picture completely backwards. I gotta admit I was pretty much doubled over in pain.

Rather than just saying that everything is the opposite of what we intuit, what evidence did you give you? That is a bold theory (which, as far as I have thought it out in the past minute, it makes no sense at all either) and therefore needs strong evidence.

He seems to be theorising only about the light from distant stars while ignoring light between near sources that we can accurately measure. We can set up a light source and a measuring device here on Earth, or in orbit, and measure the speed of light based on the time it takes to travel that distance. We know this small distance isn't shrinking at 186,000 Miles per second. How can he get around that problem?

So, then, according to him, the speed of light should not be constant. The closer to the center, the smaller the speed of light will be, i.e. for us it should decrease with time, as we get closer to the center.

Also, how is it that you see the light from a light bulb, no matter what your relative position to the light bulb is?

How ironic this in a thread where the Sherdoggers are bashing the theories of a professional physicist.
