Sword of Shannara and Elfstones are great books. Wishsong is good, but not as good as the first two.
The Scions of Shannara is not quite as good as the first trilogy, but still very good.
The next couple of Shannara series absolutely blow, specifically:
First King of Shannara - Stand alone book
The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara trilogy
High Druid of Shannara trilogy - this was so bad I cannot make it through the second book and never read the third.
Brooks newest trilogy is called the Genesis of Shannara. The first book was excellent. On par with his early Shannara novels. The second book was not as good but still very readable.
Brooks Word/Void series is also good, but I would not recommend his Magic Kingdom for Sale series at all.

I liked Scions better than the first series, but that is probably because I read them first. I totally disagree about First King of Shannara. I really enjoyed it, and it's done in one book. I've enjoyed all the Shannara books, really, but I hardly watch movies anymore and books are my primary source of entertainment. Brooks usually delivers what I am expecting. The first Genesis book was great, and the second was pretty good, but you're right, it's not as good as the first one.

With that said, the Riftwar series is great and should be a must read. Feist like Brooks starts to fail with some later books such The Riftwar Legacy Tilogy. Those three books were unreadable. Conclave of Shadows, Exile Returns was bad as well. The latest trilogy is also subpar.

I liked the Serpentwar bette rthan the Riftwar, Pug is kind of annoying to me. The books in between the two series I enjoyed a lot, especially The King's Buccaneer. Feist is like Brooks to me. Good entertaining stories that I can read fast. Lots of action and violence in Feist's books. I love the character Nakor, hence my username. I agree about LOTR. I respect what Tolkien did, but the books themselves are boring as hell. I enjoyed The Hobbit, though.
Anyone read The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant? I've read the first trilogy years ago, and thought they were fantastic. Covenant himself is very unlikeable, but I couldn't put the books down. The Bloodguard might be the biggest badasses in fantasy history.

I thought the first two books of the Serpentwar were very good, Rise of a Merchant Prince being my favorite of that series. I liked Prince of the Blood and Kings Buccaneer alot as well.
When I was a young teen I tried the first Thomas Covenant book, but did not get into it.

Covenant is intentionally not a likeable character, but the books are great. Give them a shot, I'd be curious to hear what you think about them.

I'm reading 'Chronicles of the Black Company' right now by Glen Cook. The book is pretty good, lots of battles(nowhere near the detail that Brooks does though), interesting characters and the story is pretty entertaining.

I read all the Black Company books. First 2 or 3 were pretty good.
