Great thread... I actually went through all 70 pages and figured I'd add some stuff from my previous jobs:

Movie Theater: Much of what has been said is true. Popcorn is dirt cheap and we'd throw out trashbag fulls at the end of the day. If a movie messes up, complain and you will get a refund/voucher. Interesting note is that womens bathrooms have to be cleaned and restocked up 3 times as much as men's and the girls always dreaded doing it.

Marshalls Dept Store: Plain clothes security was called "LPs" or loss prevention. If a manager or cashier needed to call the LP they would page "Dept 99". Only 3 cameras in the store were active. 2 facing the registers, and one in the shoe department because it was all the way in the back corner and prone to be where people would try to steal stuff. We could not apprehend anyone ourselves but the LPs could.

Tech Support in a call center for Sony Playstation 2: During X-Mas of 2002 when PS2 was out. they had a known issue and there was specific error that if anyone mentioned they would immediately get a new unit. They did not want to do a recall. We even got memos that if any news agencies called we would have to give them some prewritten thing. These units were seriously f'ed.

3-D Crystals: You've probably seen those things where they take a 3-D scan of your face and etch it in to a crystal. Well, we sold those things for up to 300+ dollars while the cost to buy one was about $3. Then agian the laser that etches it cost a good $50,000+ and uses the same laser they use in surgery.

Video Editor for a Small Time Porn Company: Alot of those amateur sites use the same girls. My boss use to pull girls of craigslist or AOL. One of his girls, he met in a chat, but she was 17. He kept talking to her and when she turned 18, the day after she did her first shoot. Felt bad cause he screwed her life up bad. Well it was pretty screwed to begin with. And the adult video industry is so shady. What can you really expect though?

Couple notes: Las Vegas will look totally different in 10 years. If you haven't been there in 2-3+ years, wait about 2 more and you will be amazed as how much it will have changed. I worked in the reprographics industry and some of the projects I saw were interesting. By the way if you want to get blueprints to secure places, get a job with a reprographics company.

Also, if you dive, DO NOT use a Seadoo Seascooter. They are horrible pieces of junk and some of the return stories I have heard would amaze you.

Key blanks are another product that us hardware guys make 1000% on.

Basic key blank @ cost = 11 cents
Suggested Retail = $1.00 - $2.00

Medeco key blank= 16 cents
Suggest retail = $4.50-$6.00

Mul-t-lock cost= 50cents
Retail- Anywhere from 11 to 16 dollars.

Most key machines are purchased for a fraction of their original price at auctions, or given [I've seen this 4-5 times] to opening hardware stores from supers, porters, or people who used to own hardware stores. So its not like the prices of keys are evening the price of the machine.

Most shit at your 'mom and pop' hardware store is priced in accordance to the customer, but usually always overpriced. Keys are a huge rip off tho.

For example...

My uncle/aunt rent the claw machines that allow you to get stuffed animals (regularly found in arcades places) and I found out that the way that thing works is that it has a timer that changes the claws strength. Therefore, if you are playing when the claw is on strong, you are almost guaranteed to get the stuffed animal. In other words, the claw can be weak for 20 min, then switch to strong for 2 min, and then to weak again for 20 min. Those times are adjustable.
Friggin bast*rds, made me waste $$$ trying to win these stupid stuffed animals for my gf!!

-Black market trade is widely accepted, even encouraged. Counterfeit is rife and intellectual property means absolutely nothing.

-Everyone rips off tourists, in fact, its encouraged. Lots of restaurants have two menus, one for the locals and one for the non-chinese speaking visitors. There are schemes within schemes everywhere. You get major bonus points if you can correctly spot the scams that occur daily.

.[/QUOTE]

Seen a bit of a program about the first one showing some "underground" shopping mall where you can buy conterfit watchs to fake airmax 95's (there where lots of these in the uk last year starting to die down now tho) they where saying on the program that the police turn a blind eye on this sort of stuff. Also this was the place you go to look at samples and caalogs (Ithink) to get them shipped over in them bit continers.

the second one you mention happens in a few countrys like spain and turkey Ive seen sign outside saying prices diffrent fpr locals, which I think is fair because most of these places are poor so why not give there own cheaper things?

Iwork as a legal analyst. My lame contribution to this thread is that no matter how bad you think the crime rate is . . . it's worse. I'm completely inured to it after 9&1/2 years at this job. I get home and my gf asks me if I have any new cases to work on. "Just another machete attack in [name the city]," I reply. The violent crime rate (murders and rapes, of course, but also home invasions, violent armed robberies, etc.) are rampant. Drugs are absolutely everywhere (not just weed or meth; cocaine, crack, and heroine are most popular in terms of trafficking). Domestic abuse, I am beginning to think, occurs in about 1/2 of all households. Sexual abuse of kids is an epidemic, and most often perpetrated (in my observations) by a mother's boyfriend upon the mother's kid(s).
BTW, if you're into coke or crack, bear in mind that the glassine baggie it comes in was, it is very likely, stuffed up some dealer's ass at some point. (I had one kind of comical case where the cops arrested a guy after they observed him dealing. During booking, the cops asked him if he had any other contraband on him. He literally dropped his pants and pulled ten bags of crack out of his ass.)
If you can think of a crime, it's happening right now.
