The Space Exploration Thread!

I've noticed that people take little interest in space exploration nowadays. Perhaps this thread would rekindle that lost dream. How feasible is it to establish a Martian colony? Is "tesseract travel"* an alternative to traveling by rocket ship? If we were to reach a "parallel universe", would we see a mirror-image of ourselves? Etc. etc.

Discuss.

*Tesseract is mentioned in "A Wrinkle of Time" by Madeleine L' Engle. It's not tesseract per se but rather a "wormhole" that folds dimensions that bring two locations together.

I think it would be super-cool to send some people to Mars.

We should send all the dumbasses, slow drivers and pussies to Mars first and allow their carcasses to enrich the soil and then maybe in 150 years we can set up colonies and alugh at all the dumbasses that actually thought htey could live on Mars with no Oxygen.

IMO it's just a matter of time anyway, but plenty of it. 100 years ago, people considered the idea of flying to the moon as crazy. considering the rapid technical progression, people in a 100 years time will look back on us and it will seem like stoneage to them

But right now, the federal government doesn't appear to be interested in sending astronauts to that planet. No, I don't intend another Bush-hating rant about him plunging America into debt, Iraq War, etc. etc. I don't blame him when he lowered funding for NASA. Sending men into space takes plenty of money and fuel.

It's hard to make investments in the future or the environment when you believe the rapture and the end of the world are coming.

Last I heard NASA's Mars plans aren't yet in the toilet, and Bush surprisingly hasn't been that bad for them - he has an understanding of the buoyant effect the mention of space travel has on his support base. I think they're aiming to have a permanent robotic probe land on Mars around 2018.

Besides, in a few years NASA might be old news anyway. I'm guessing the future of Mars will be dictated by China.

The next generation shuttle will double as a return vehicle from mars.
