Sony's Hirai: Years before PS3's power fully manifests itself

So the PS3 will be a good buy around 2011 or 2012.

Why do these Sony guys do this to themselves?

We won't see games that really use PS3's full grunt until "four, five or six years down the line", says SCE president HIRAI.

It's going to be a wee while before we claps eyes on games that squeeze every ounce of polygon-powering grunt out of PS3, according to Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai.

"The power that we've packed into PS3 will really manifest itself in software titles that come up four, five or six years down the line", Hirai has told Official PlayStation Magazine in its latest issue.

We can't wait that long. Can you?

During the interview Hirai also addressed the 'issue' of certain developers finding PS3 tough to develop for. He acknowledging that the console is a more complex animal for developers to work with compared to its rivals, but this appears to be a good thing.

"If you look back at the commentary we received when we launched PS2, there was a lot of talk to the effect that 'It's very difficult to program for' and 'It's easier on a Dreamcast'. It's happened before," Hirai said.

"If they came back and told me, 'PS3? We can do this in a heartbeat,' that would be worrying because what it is telling me is that we're not pushing the envelope from a technology standpoint."

by that time, Microsoft will have an anaconda choke on the gaming industry. They need to come up with a big line up to keep gamers interested in the ps3.

Warkhawk's the first game i've seen sold out for the ps3 in a while.

By that time, Xbox 3 will be on store shelves.

That's pretty much like saying, don't buy or judge it now, give it 4 to 5 years.

do you think MS and Nintendo are going to wait that long to develop and release their new consoles?

Bullshizzle.

I know it takes a while to make good games, but 5-6 years? n64 came out in 9/1996 and the greatest game ever, Golden Eye 007, was released in 1997. 5-6 years from now better gaming systems will be available at lower costs. I think its a bad idea for Sony announce and plan for a console to be viable for more than half of a decade. I know they have done that in the past, but with today's gadget crazy society this could backfire. It's already getting destroyed by technologically inferior products that are more innovative in terms of use and price points. To reference another thread; Sony made the DeLorean of video game consoles.

What a crock. The only reason they got away with the horrifically bad architecture of PS2 was that people had to develop for it because it was very quickly the market share leader. That is not the case now, and is not likely to be any time soon. So people are not going to spend 2x the work getting things working well on PS3; PS3 versions will continue to be slightly poorer ports of their 360 version cousins. And 5 or 6 years of getting used to the stupid hardware architecture still will not make the underpowered graphics system any better -- that will always be a bottleneck.
