Someone please explain NASCAR...

Here's the deal: I live in Kentucky. Here in the upper South, NASCAR is a religion. I'm a heathen. I just don't "get" what is so interesting about watching this pastime (I refuse to call it a "sport"). I've tried watching races on TV at home and at friends' houses. I swear - by the 3rd or 4th lap, I'm asleep on the couch and everyone's wondering what's wrong with me. Racing can be exciting, but I think people are making a really big deal out of cars driving in circles. Yes, they'r FAST, but it's still BORING.

Perhaps it's the celebrities and personalities involved in NASCAR - kinda like WWE? At least once a week, someone comes up to me at work and says, "Boy, ol' Jeff's havin' a good year, ain't he?" I have no fucking clue what they're talking about, and they seem to get irritated with me. It's only a matter of time before these fanatics come to my house and burn a cross in my front yard...

Has anyone else experienced this? And is NASCAR as popular in other parts of the USA besides the southern states? I'd like to have some fans explain why they like watching cars make left turns for hours on end and tell me why I should watch it. I've always loved things mechanical -especially working on cars- and I'd seriously like to be interested in NASCAR, but I just can't get excited about it.

I've never got it either. I know people who get together every weekend to watch that shit. I gave it an honest try but couldn't take it.

Yes, Quadros really did compare Nick Diaz to Alexis Arguello.

A Tutorial On Appreciating NASCAR

Lesson 1: NASCAR is cars going in a circle.

Lesson 2: Here's your diploma. Do not smoke it.

Watching cars race laps is like watching someone eating ice cream.

Not her, though.

I went to a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event around 98 and I like it OK. It was hot and it lasted 3 hours, but it was entertaining, to say the least. I can't watch a full event on TV without getting bored out of my mind, but I'll watch for about an hour or half an hour until something good comes on and I'll be alright. One event I saw on TV was at night and it was only 70 laps, so it didn't last that long and everybody at home (about 10 people, 0 of them NASCAR fans) enjoyed it. I guess it's sort of like hockey and/or baseball in the sense that it seems boring and pointless until you see it live, then it's not so bad.

5 minutes of a single rally race has more action than an entire year of nascar.

Motor sports are popular throughout the world, it's only in America that circle track is watched.

America- Nascar

Rest of the planet- Rally racing and F1.

Yeah, but I could watch figure skating live and probably have a good time...especially if the skaters were hot.
