Social Anxiety Disorder
Wanted a make a thread about this cos i recently found out I had it after months of me suspecting it. i didn't make it to get sympathy (so please spare it) but because it's not known to most people.
It's basically what its name says, fear of most social situations. Most people have tiny elements of it (such as public speaking for example - i believe it or not don't have this fear) but a few have many. shit like being scared to talk to people on the phone, not being able to piss in a public toilet cos u don't want people to hear ya pissin, feeling extremely tense in most normal social situations (in a restaurant for example), a large want to avoid being in anywhere with a lotta people and feeling like everyone else is too good for you. It impacts many in many different ways good or bad and I gotta admit that during the last few years at universities it was more of a blessing because it automatically enabled me to focus on my studies which to me is the most important thing in my life but in about a month a will have finished so I know if I don't try getting over it now it will turn really bad. I mean I don't want to go to clubs and pubs and start having one night stands n shit like that most 21 yr olds do because to be frank that life's never appealed to me I just do shit like ask people for any help I need without feeling guilty, be able to phone people without feeling nervous, piss in a toilet without thinking of those around me, be able to ask out the girl of my dreams just normal things like this that most people do. They have drugs like Paxil to treat the disease but Ive personally decided to go all eastern n spiritual to change me for the better because its my belief that drugs will only serve as a band-aid solution but I may be wrong. So next time you ask that guy you know (but don't all too well) if he wants to join u and ur mates to a party or somethin like that and he turns ya down flat for no particular reason try not to get mad, he too may have social anxiety disorder. Good day

Did you actually go to a shrink and get it diagnosed?
And even so, why are you posting on a public forum? I mean, this is inhabited by the very same people you claim to be afraid of, so wouldn't you be petrified of our potential responses to your condition?

Yeh I did and well the internet is different from real life social situations. Like there is an anonymity here that you don't get in real life. In real life people see you and you see and feel them around you so its much more in your face then a place like an internet forum where everyone's behind a screen talking under a made up name.

So they want to sell more medicine agains shyness. Nothing wrong with being shy. But in many situations it could cause problems due to how society funktions.
With me, I'm not shy, I just don't like people.

Agree totally. Not to make light of the threadstarter but everyone feels that way. Its a way to create new prescription drugs.

I was diagnosed with SAD in '99. They also told me I was an alcoholic. I told them, "No sh*t, Sherlock. If I felt comfortable around people, I wouldn't have to drink." I won't take meds for it either, but it's really difficult to make myself go out and do anything around other people.

As mention above, there's 3 ways:
1-Pills
2-Alcohol
3-Suicide
