Thats why it feels so real, because it is.
Your brain may even start to dream, making shadows or sending chills down your spine, while youre lying there, it can be quite terrifying.

But if you know whats going on, you can actually turn it into a good thing.
I've had those sleep paralysis dreams where you actually manage to get up painstakingly and end up feeling all heavy yet light and falling backwards into a pile of stuff (no pain whatsoever) and then I wake up. Often I've wondered if it's possible that it's a slight out of body experience.

Has anyone ever slipped into SP and people around you thought you were awake?

This happend to me a few months ago...It was in the middle of the day and i decided to take a nap on the lounge. Sure enough i slipped into SP and was laying there with my eyes open and my sister came over (she thought i was awake) and she wanted to lie down on the lounge...She was sick at the time so if i was able to i would've gotten up straight away to let her lie down but i couldn't move and she put her hand my shoulder and started to shake me. I started breathing heavy to try and indicate to her that something was wrong but it didn't register and she kept shaking me...Finally i slipped out of it, got up and let her lie down. It was wierd.

i posted this is another thread, but here's my sleep paralysis story

I'm 23 and have had episodes of sleep paralysis since I was about 4. I get them a couple of times a month.

Sometimes they are triggered when my blanket is covering my nose and mouth. I wake up in my mind and start freaking out because I feel that I can't breathe. What is even more scary is the fact that, no matter how hard I try I can't move the blanket from my face. Surely, everytime when I feel as if I'm about to suffocate to death I suddently wake up in a cold sweat.

In my teenage years when I shared a room with my brother and was suffering a case of sleep paralysis, there would be times that I could see him awake while I was asleep. I would try to call out to him to wake me up. Sometimes, it would feel as if I was able to actually talk and scream at him "wake me up!" I would get terrified that he was torturing me by not helping me. When I actually did wake up I would ask him if he could hear me asking him to wake me up and he said that he didn't.

I got lucky 3 years ago when I met my now girlfriend, who I live with. When we moved in together I would still get my occasional bout of the paralysis, which I explained to her. I had it one time when she was awake next to me. When I came out of it I asked her if she noticed anything and she told me that I was just breathing really hard.

Since my breath, is the only thing I can control during sleep paralysis, we developed a thing when everytime I'm suffering a bout of it, I would breathe as hard and fast as I could. Even when she is asleep, she hears it and wakes me up. It's almost as if an angel is saving me from near death. Until this day I still have it, but most of the time my gf wakes me up from it.

Same thing happened to me once, but on my legs. Years ago, when I was living with my folks I got out of bed one morning to go to the bathroom, stood up and then just fell over. I couldnt figure it out, but my legs did nothing. I kinda started to freak out. So I crawled using my arms, basically dragging myself across my room to my door. By the time I got there, the feeling was starting to return and I was able to beging to pick myself up. After a few minutes I was back to normal. Hasnt happened since, but it was nuts.

i had to resurrect this thread.

i've had sleep paralysis a number of times in my life, but 2 most recent times i had it were particularly unique. i had a conversation with another one of my friends and he said your experiences are similar to people who get abducted by aliens. i wasn't buying it and still am not going to ( who would be comfortable falling asleep at night knowing aliens may come visit you).

the first recent sleep paralysis was in florida at my uncle house. i was a sleep on my stomach and not dreaming as of yet. i woke up but couldn't move or talk. the strangest thing about this experience was, what i call, a presence. it seems that sleep paralysis for me is never just not being able to move. i couldn't move and got pretty freaked out about, the purest form of terror. then two small hands apply pressure on my shoulder blades, trying to keep me down. after what seemed like a couple minutes, i slipped into a dream in that same room but i knew then i wasn't awake and it wasn't. the dream was still pretty scary though

the other time i had sleep paralysis was at my ex girlfriends. in the summer i usually sleep in the basement because it is much cooler. there is a water softener in the other room that makes noises throughout the night. when the sleep paralysis hit me, i could have sworn i was hearing much different noises than normal. amidst all of these i could hear footsteps down the stairs. i was freaking out. the strange thing is i snapped out of it, but continued into a dream that had nothing to do with that scenario. when i woke a few hours later i got up and bolted upstairs into the living room and watched tv until the sunrise. very freak

the reason why i share this is because i know im experiencing sleep paralysis, but i don't know how common it is to have the feeling of something else in the room that is threatening. i didn't read the entire thread yet but i figured i would share this first. i have also been told i talk in a strange tongues while i sleep

on a side note. i had a pretty insane out of body experience at the peak of a mushroom trip. very very scary but also pretty enlightening. i just think i am in tuned to another dimension or something
