Sleep Paralysis....scary stuff!

I've had this happen before....a few times a year at least, but this just happened three times in a row.....I had surgery recently, maybe it's having an effect...maybe the medicine...but shit, it's scary....

I get the typical feeling where I go to lay down....(think I fall alseep) and then next thing I know, I am alert, but I cannot move my body, not even a finger...I cant make a noise....and I hear this loud noise almost too...I kid you not, the last time I thought I was dying, I started praying to God....then I snapped out of it....anybody else ever experience this before to this extent? I dont even wnat to go to bed, but I need the rest to recover form surgery and I have a dr. appointment tomorrow

It's happened to me a number of times. It feels really scary, but I've learned by now that it's not that big of a deal, I'll just snap awake, take a few deep breaths, and then go back to sleep.

Once I woke up and my ENTIRE arm was completely numb, like it felt dead. I couldn't move the damn thing. It really tripped me out but it went away after 10 minutes.

You are actually dreaming. While being awake. Yeah, sounds crazy.

Your body has entered, or is about to ente "sleepmode" So youre completely paralyzed, which happens when you sleep. But your mind is awake, and you get sensory input thru your eyes.

Thats why it feels so real, because it is.
Your brain may even start to dream, making shadows or sending chills down your spine, while youre lying there, it can be quite terrifying.

But if you know whats going on, you can actually turn it into a good thing.

This used to happen to me in college every so often, but it hasn't happened in years. Very disorienting.

Oddly enough, the psychologist Susan Blackmore (among others) considers sleep paralysis to be the number one cause of people believing they've been abducted by aliens etc.

I first experienced it about 30 years ago, I'd been playing around with the ouija board with some mates earlier that evening and when it happened I was totally freaked out.

Unfortunately, the cause wasn't commonly known back then, at least nowadays it's recognized as being unpleasant but fairly harmless.

Also, after a while you get more 'used' to it.

Yep.
