Similarities in the Chicano, Native American, and Hawaiian accent

Ever notice it, wonder what the explanation is among specific groups that arent related but share an accent

I've heard the same thing said about Australian and Southern accents. For example, in an interview with Nicole Kidman about the film Cold Mountain, she mentioned that the accent was the easiest part to learn because southern and australian accents have so many overlaps.

I don't think the accents sound anything alike.

Chicanos and native Americans have a lot in common. They both descend from a group of people that came over the same land bridge into the Americas. One group went further south, but still.

I've been asked where my accent is from by Native Californians and I'm a Native Californian.

Chicano and Native American accents are REALLY similar, but not Hawaiian, IMO.

how about physical apperances. Watch the movie Shanghi Noon (with Jackie Chan) and the part where he is smokin' w/ the indians, look at their facial characteristics (especially the cheekbones and nose) and tell me how similar they look. I'm always amazed at that.

A Mexican American once told me that "Chicano" is a pejorative.

He said he prefers "Spanish," or "Mexican."

Is that true across the board or just this guy?
