Serious **Video Game** Discussion

There are currently FOUR threads about Fallout 3, TWO about Fable 2, and there will most likely be SIX about Gears of War in the coming days. The Mayberry and Off-Topic forums need to be cleaned up, so I'm following HuntersCreed's example and creating a thread we need to have here.

For real video game fans.

This thread isn't for:
-people that think 50 Cent: Bulletproof was one of the top 20 greatest games of all time.
-people that think John Romero is a GREAT game designer, or find Dakikatana appealing.
-people who's only real opinions are that GTA 4, Guitar Hero, Final Fantasy X, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Madden NFL, Super Mario Bros., Super Metroid, etc. are the greatest games of all time and that's all they can talk about. Though the aforementioned games are great, and discussing them is welcome.
-people that Shigeru Miyamoto, Shigeru Miyamoto, Shigeru Miyamoto, blah, blah, blah, Shigeru Miyamoto.

This thread is for:
-people who value the artistry that takes place behind the pixels, as well as the animation of them.
-people who realize that explosions and special effects aren't the only thing that make a good game.
-people who have played a few games beyond what Microsoft puts out.
-people who know some game designers and their styles.
-people who know who one or more of the following are.

What's wrong with Ocarina of Time? I also liked Mario 64. Those are 2 of my all-time favorite games up there with FF12 and the .hack GU series for PS2.

Btw if anyone has played the newest FF game I'm interested in reviews.

used to be a huge pc gamer. but since about may i almost stopped playin games completely. im sort of waiting for project origin to come out. for some reason i was fascinated by the whole story, and i also loved the horror and action sequences. im really hoping they actually try to take the plot somewhere and not just leave more questions than answers at the end. but based on the way most game endins are nowadays thats probably wishful thinking.

Nothing's wrong with OOT or Mario 64, read that part again .

.hack was pretty awesome but I didn't get past the first game.

As far as KOTOR goes, I'd have to say it is close to being worthy of GOAT status.

My big problems with KOTOR were these:
1.) Could have been longer
2.) Buggy as hell
3.) Graphics were really lacking
4.) Two-handed lightsabers were horrible compared to dual-wielding halfway through the game.
5.) Not enough armor choices.
6.) Not enough variety lightsaber crystals to truly accomodate your play style (melee, force, etc.)
7.) There could have been more variations to the story based on what side you chose, there weren't enough major consequences.
8.) Turret minigame was not necessary and not that fun.
9.) Dark side powers >>>>> Light side powers

Plutoburn's best games of all time:

Action Adventure: Prince of Persia serie
RTS: Starcraft
Japanese RPG: FF8
American RPG: Diablo 2
MMO: I've only played FF11 and WoW, both took way way too much time to play, and enjoyment lessened as one gets deeper into it and it feels like work. To break it down really simply, FF11 is less complicated in terms of tasks, but incredibly difficult to complete it. WoW has a more complicated task, but the individual tasks are easier to complete.
FPS: Single Player: Doom, Multiplayer: Counter strike
Tycoon game: Transport Tycoon (came out on 2 floppy disk, and addictive and interesting as hell, graphic was way way ahead of its time and just hours and hours of fun)

Simulation: The Sims 2
Platform: Really a toss up between SMB3 or Super Mario World. Love both.
Fighting Game: SF3: third strike

Played KoTOR and the sequel, I think in that genre, Mass Effect is right up there with it. I can't pick a clear cut winner. But Jedi is too unbalanced in the game, the best team = 3 Jedi together... whereas Mass effect's team choice is a little bit more interesting in that play style will determine which characters best suit you rather than the innate qualities of the characters.

Super Mario 64 will probably be the greatest video game of all time.

I'm a little concerned with Call of Duty 5. I'm a big fan of 4 and am used to stuff like the scopes and detailed radar. I'm worried there might be a big learning curve for me, as they didn't have fancy shit back then.
