I haven't read through every page in this thread, but I'm glad it's here because I've added a few movies mentioned to my Netflix queue. I've heard good things about Blood In Blood Out, so it's number one on my queue.
Anyway, I have a few recommendations.
Seven Samurai - directed by one of the greatest directors ever, Akiro Kurosawa. Yes, it is a long movie, but it's one of the best I've ever seen. It currently holds 11th place on the IMDB list of highest rated movies, and for good reason.
Yojimbo - another Kurosawa movie. A samurai enters a town split into two factions and plays each side off in order to get more money. Sergio Leone eventually made this movie into a western called "A Fistful Of Dollars," another great movie starring Clint Eastwood.
Ran - ok last Kurosawa movie I'll mention. It is slow in places, but the story (borrowed from Shakespeare), the acting (especially the Great Lord), and the filming itself are all top-notch. I always enjoy a great ending, and this film delivers.
Dark City - a mid-90's movie that went under the radar, but I enjoyed it. I don't want to give anything away, so let's just say this is the only movie where you'll see Melissa George's boobs (the extremely hot girl in 30 Days of Night).
In The Mouth Of Madness - Sam Neill has a habit of staring in movies that go under the radar, but are very good. A writer (Sutter Cane) has been writing horror novels that have been affecting the behaviors of some of his readers, causing them to do crazy things. I'll let you watch the rest of this movie. This is one that I'd strongly recommend to horror fans.
The Thing - the movie got terrible reviews when it first came out, and did horrible at the box office (mostly because another "friendly" alien movie, ET, came out weeks before). However, if you love horror (and if you love 80's movies like me), this is strongly recommended.
The People Under The Stairs - EXTREMELY underrated movie, IMO. Although it was filmed in the 90's, it has an 80's feel to it. A young boy (Fool) has a dying mother and helps rob his landowners in order to get the money for her operation. However, he (and his other companion, Ving Rhames) get more than they bargained for.
Downfall - a German movie about Adolf Hitler's last days. Besides a great storyline, Bruno Gantz's performance as Adolf Hitler will never be matched. One of the best movies I've ever seen.
For the record, I hated Memento. Absolutely hated it.

I love zombie/isolation movies, but I didn't like Diary of the Dead.
Dawn of the Dead, however, is probably the best zombie movie I've ever seen. I really enjoyed that movie.

Wow. I don't know that I've ever come across someone who has had such a vehement dislike for that movie. Some people like it more than others, of course, but I've never come across someone who genuinely hated it.
Care to elaborate on the reasons why you didn't like it?

For me, the original Night of the Living Dead still trumps them all.
And I just saw Get Smart and thought it was hilarious. I'm sure it will continue to get mixed reviews, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself from beginning to end, and at some points, was laughing hysterically.
I think a lot of people have been turned off because it looks like Steve Carell is just repeating his Michael Scott character, but he really isn't. Anyone who knows/appreciates acting can see innumerable differences between the two characters.
If there was an accurate comparison to be made, I'd make it between his character in this film and Peter Sellers as Inspecter Clouseau. Now, of course, Carell is nowhere near the level of absurdity and hilarity of Sellers' inept detective, but he is still incredibly funny and elevated the awkward charm of his character to a level I really think only he could've.
Alan Arkin was also hilarious (in fact, the scene with him and Carell driving through a golf course was the hardest I laughed throughout the whole movie thanks to him) as was The Rock (although he was in surprisingly little of the movie compared to what I expected) and also be on the look out for Terence Stamp as Sigfried, Bill Murray as Agent 13, James Caan as the President, and Patrick Warburton as a robot
I absolutely recommend seeing Get Smart. The only real complaint I have is that the action/fight scenes were too jerky and it was too hard to see what was happening. Other than that, though, I really don't have anything bad to say about the film.
8/10 for me.

Interesting take. After watching it again, it was better than I remember, but my initial review still stands. It just isn't a classic. Very good movie, but not great.

Between the extended cut, the directors cut, the uneditted extended directors cut, the unrated version, the theatrical version, and the caveman version I'd be hard pressed to say. I hate it when they do multiple releases of a movie into oblivion. Give us a directors cut that's been remastered, and leave it at that please.
