I was disappointed.

I felt that In Bruges wasn't really sure what it wanted to be or do in terms of tone (and that always gets on my tits e.g. - The Way Of The Gun) and seemed very similar, though vastly inferior, to Sexy Beast.

Definitely going to get some replies to this review...

I watched Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. I've found there are two basic things that you never talk about because most people can't be rational during the discussion: religion and politics. I'd add the origin and advancement of life into that equation. The first thing I noticed about the film is that Ben Stein interviewed experts in the field. He didn't go the Bill Maher route and interview the guy dressed as Jesus at the county fair, he interviewed people from both sides who were experts.

It's amazing to me how much some scientists, especially those who run powerful scientific organizations, cull away from the words "intelligent design" like a vampire from a crucifix. Usually ID is written off as an asinine theory. I just never fully understood this until a few years ago, when I realized that to even allow the idea of ID having any validity would shake the foundations of many people's point of view (atheism/agnosticism). Instead of science being open to different viewpoints, which is how science truly grew, certain viewpoints are eliminated, and as this film shows, can cost people their jobs.

I think evolution is a very viable way of explaining the advancement of life, and should be taught in schools. What I don't understand is why anyone who dares question this viewpoint is negatively stigmatized. By no means am I saying ID should be taught in classes, but I am saying that there seems to be a movement of people with agendas who want to stifle other professionals who believe different things. That's taking a step backwards, IMO. That viewpoint has not been able to adequately explain how organic, self-replicating molecules began.

Anyway, I think the film was done fairly well, though I didn't like the cutbacks to older films used to get points across. I'd give the documentary an 8/10. I probably would have rated the film higher if the final discussion between Ben Stein and Richard Dawkins would have been longer. Regardless where you stand on this issue, if you watch this documentary (or any documentary for that matter), realize that the creator of the documentary has the power to edit things that fit his or her point of view.

Just an update on the previous post... I've been reading the film's IMDB page, and it seems as if many people are upset with the editing of their interviews.

I guess it's the same with just about any political documentary - editing will always give a nonobjective film. Since I bash Michael Moore for doing this, I will do the same for Ben Stein if this is indeed the truth.

What I'd like to see is each interview in its entirety. Until then, all I can say is that it seems Mr. Stein edited this film to fit his point of view. I'm about to give up on political/social documentaries altogether.

I'm not going to claim I've seen Expelled, but I did see the review page at Rotten Tomatoes and it perfeclty echoes what a Christian friend of mine said after seeing the film: It is propaganda that doesn't even succeed as propaganda.

"Hard to watch" is how she described it. Then again, she's a supporter of evolution much like Christian scientists, so she might be a little biased as well.

After watching a few scenes and trailers from it, it seems that the film, just like most intelligent design supporters, simply miss the point of why they aren't allowed in school.

Two things: 1.) Faith is not science no matter how you look at it. 2.) There is separation of church and state in America.

I don't think I'll be watching it anytime soon. I'll be honest, I considered renting it at Blockbuster when it first came out as I love hearing intelligent arguments that differ from my own point of view, but I'd rather not hear this one from the "Bueller" guy.

As Good As It Gets is as good as it gets (DAMN I'm funny). Hilarious movie that does not play into the romantic dramedy formula. Great performances by everyone except Cuba Gooding. Definitely one of my favorite movies.
