I call it the Titanic box office affect. It’s not terribly original, but nobody has to explain it to you. It explains itself.

One of my personal favorites. Thought I'd share it with those who don't know about it's simple beauty.

i'm actually a really big horror fan. i can't remember the last quality american horror flick that came out tho. there used to be a lot more good movies that happened to be scary (the Shining, The Omen, Exorcist, The Thing), now they're just made to be over the top gory or just brimming with CGI and cheap scares. That or a terrible attempt of a remake - when a stranger calls, black christmas, the hitcher, too many to name
what are some newer horror flicks that are actually good movies? the last one i can recall is Scream I

Unfortunately American cinema has shit the bed on the horror movie front. Which sucks because I'm a huge fan as well. A few exceptions though:
The Ruins - definitely not what you'd expect, and the movie is just absolutely brutal. I actually highly recommend this one, and it's not simply because I had no expectations coming in. Plus the Laura Ramsey tit shot makes it more than worth your time.
The Strangers - I didn't think it was great personally, but it's got an old school vibe some people have appreciated, so it may be up your ally.
Teeth - another film I didn't like, but if a movie about a girl dealing with having serrated teeth in her vagina sounds intriguing then this movie is for you.
Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead - I actually love this movie, but it's only worth your time if you don't mind musical numbers, a lot of scat humor, and gay mexicans reincarnated as chicken sandwiches to go along with your usual zombie mayhem. It's Troma so that probably tells you something.
The Lost Boys 2: The Tribe - just kidding. But Corey Haim has an absolutely stupid cameo that had me in stitches.
The foreign stuff, especially in France, has been good to the horror genre however:
[Rec] (Spanish horror getting a shot for shot American remake- do yourself a favor and watch this one; one of the best horror films I've seen this past decade)
Inside/Vnutri
Them/Ils
The Host
Frontier(s)
High Tension (stupid fucking ending, but you'll probably like the first hour)
Wolf Creek (wasn't a fan personally but a lot of people seemed to like it)
I haven't seen Frontier(s) by the way, but I hear it's pretty good.

It also brings up another issue in the movie, and that is how certain unpleasant videos (such as suicides) are freely accessible over the internet. If you don't expect a masterpiece, this movie's definitely worth a watch.
Untraceable = 7.5/10

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie also.
