And I watched Fred Zinneman's ( Day of the Jackal) 1948 Holocaust film The Search (1948)
The film starred Montgomery Clift as a G.I. who comes across a hungry child. He gives him his sandwich and then takes him back to his place and tries to find out who the kid is, where he came from, and if he has any family.
It's a marvelous film and the first time my expectations were actually exceeded with a Holocaust films. I'm used to being disappointed ( Schindler's List and The Pianist) but this film was so great, especially because it deals with the subject matter from a child's point of view, and I don't know that there's been a Holocaust film that's dealt with the impact the events of that time period had on the kids who watched their siblings and parents and friends get taken away and/or killed.
Highly recommend it.
Also: Montgomery Clift might possibly be the most underrated actor ever. Everybody loves Brando, but anybody who knows classic film knows Clift was Brando before Brando.

I understand being disappointed by the Pianist, the only part of that movie I thought was well made was the piano playing at the end. Schindler's list is a movie I tend toward an extreme position every time I watch it. Sometimes I think its a great movie, sometimes I think its manipulative and overwrought.
Seven I think is a borderline great movie (for people that can handle that level of violence) that has a few issues deus ex machinas and liquid motivation for some of the characters. I like the performances by everyone but Paltrow, but I tend to like Pitt's acting anyway.

I loved that film. IIRC, that was the first Kurosawa film I watched. I think I watched that, then Seven Samurai, and then Throne of Blood.
I watched Evan Almighty and thought it was very weak. I really enjoyed Bruce Almighty but didn't expect this one to be anywhere near as good.
I was right.

I read the reviews on Netflix. No one said that The Hidden Fortress was weak, just that it was one of Kurosawa's weaker movies. I completely disagree. I actually think it's one of his best.
