figured i'd throw a few suggestions. anyone who's interested check out some of larry clark's work he was a photographer in the late 60's early 70's then started directing in the 90's. he's directed kids, another day in paradise, bully and ken park which hasn't had a release in the u.s. theatrically or on dvd due to it's content but you can find it easily on ebay. his stuff isn't for every taste definitely love it or hate it but i enjoy his work.

also check out harmony korine, he wrote the above mentioned kids and ken park and has directed gummo and julien donkey boy, both are very dark and fucked up, he was also using copious amounts of drugs when making these films. he's now sobered up and his new film mr. lonely is out at smaller theatres now.

david croneneberg also has alot of great stuff, videodrome, naked lunch, existenz, shivers, dead ringers lot's of sci-fi and body horror type stuff.

WOW. and no.

Boofy might eventually get an oscar thanks to Spielberg shoving him into peoples faces constantly...I think he has potential but slightly overhyped.

3 movies I thought I would hate and loved were:
City of Lost Children
Sideways
No Country for Old Men
(honorable mention to Shakes the Clown)

3 movies I thought I would hate and DID hate:
Starship Troopers
Kill Bill 2
Matrix 2 & 3(TERRIBLE!)

I wish Tarantino would've done that instead of Oliver Stone. Tarantino said himself that if you like that film, it's because of Oliver Stone, and if you hate it, it's again because of Oliver Stone.

It's a shame we'll never know what Tarantino originally intended with that film.

I think it's quite overrated, but I wouldn't call it garbage. Hell, Javier Bardem's performance alone makes it impossible for it to be called garbage IMO.

I still feel Fargo is their crowning achievement, though. I'll be very surprised if they ever make anything that surpasses that.

I thought Fracture was predicatable but entertaining nonetheless. It followed the Anthony Hopkins, Silence of the Lambs forumla, which is good but my no means innovative.

Personally I loved Into the Wild for the scenery, soundtrack, cinematography and incredible acting. Then again, I'm a sucker for nature, animals and how one person can change lives just by being interesting and kind.

And if you didn't appreciate that or No Country for Old Men, how about There Will Be Blood? Or The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford? Gone Baby Gone? Eastern Promises?

I haven't seen Eastern promises, all the other ones listed are pretty slow too. Jesse James was decent but entirely too long and lackluster. The original cutting that was shown at the film festival was 4 hours long!!

Oh and Casey Affleck is complete trash. Get his ass outta there!

Pretty disappointing film IMO. Other than Viggo's coolness, it was very weak.

My faves are varied for many reasons:

for comedy and sports (i guess) - slapshot

For overall great acting and filmaking - cuckoos nest

for some strange reason (maybe nationalism - who knows) but stalag 17 is one of my favorite films - when I watch it, every scene and word seems so perfectly placed and accurate - its one of the most well made films I've ever seen

personal faves for no real reason:

The Prestige (and memento for originality and pulling it off)
To live and die in LA
Manhunter
Midnight Run
The Wanderers
That was Then, This is Now
Way of the Gun
Out of Sight
Lethal Weapon - only the first
The Cincinnati Kid - good poker game flick (30 yrs before rounders)
Cool Hand Luke -
Tombstone - no point in stating the obvious.
Panic in Needle Park - Pacino's first film ; depressing as hell but the acting was so on im not sure they were acting (plus its a NYC story which I'm from).

I think every addict should watch this film or actually - every kid in elementary school right before graduation - drug use would probably diminish by half (not really - but...)

Romeo is bleeding - gary oldman is a great actor and this story is bizzarre.
angels with dirty faces (for the last scene alone in the electric chair)

Someone mentioned dogville which is one of the boldest films to actually try and make - and sell - but it was pretty sick to watch.

Someone mentioned LA confidential and being somewhat safe - I feel the same. it was a well crafted and very good fiolm - but could have been much more grittier.

I like alot of Mel Brooks stuff too. Blazing Saddles, Producers (original), Young Frankenstein - also yellowbeard is funny as hell.

ALSO - can anyone explain why there hasnt been 1 movie made from an Andrew Vachss book. Everything he ever wrote has apparently been optioned - and his Burke series is great storytelling, rich characters and perfect for cinema.

the the exact same thing..same for history of violence - wasnt bad, but then the whole ending was a joke. It actually felt like they fired the writers and got someone else to finish the last 10 pages. And Wiliam Hurt sure can ruin a flick with that near comedic performance of a gangster. He's a good actor too but every second on screen with him was like nails on a chalkboard.

Anyone see The Mist?

I was dragged to it but ended up liking it ok.

Wasn't groundbreaking but...different than I thought.

Oh and FEAST too. I rarely watch horror/suspense but that was super fun!
