Not an opinion I agree with, but a fair opinion. A lot of people are turned off by the ambiguity and bizarreness of David Lynch.

If you were as big a Katharine Hepburn fan as I am, you wouldn't think she did a great job. You'd think exactly what I think: She was a disgrace.
Not even the fact that Scorsese---who is my second favorite director next to Kubrick---directed it will enable me to suffer through that envisioning of the greatest actress to ever grace the screen.

Actually, that 1978 version with Donald Sutherland you're referring to is, itself, a remake. The actual original was the 1956 version directed by Don Siegel (
Dirty Harry) and starred Kevin McCarthy and was a fantastic science fiction film and IMO the best of the 1950s sci-fi films. I love
The Day the Earth Stood Still, but I do think I have to give the edge to
Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
