I watched Mongol with Russian dubs and English subs.
I thought some of the scene transitions were definitely different. Something dramatic would happen, and then it would flash to a new scene and 10 years have gone by.
I'm still not sure how his wife amassed a large fortune.
Overall, I liked the movie.
7/10

I finally saw Pans Labyrinth and really really liked it. I just wish that more parts of the movie were the magical parts.

I was going to go to an Ifilm theater around here and watch it. I still may.

I just watched The Fountain. What a beautiful aesthetic movie. The special effects are awesome. However, I found the movie pretty depressing. Good, but only worth one watch. 7/10.
I'm watching The Aviator right now. Wolfen is on television and it's one that I've wanted to see for awhile now, but I hate watching movies for the first time that are interlaced with commercials.

the movie is probably better on a real screen and a real cut of the movie.
It's better than crap like Alexander that's for sure.

one thing that the medium of film couldn't represent as well as the novel did, was to represent the strylized manhattan that bateman lives is, where every yuppy is so similar that you can't tell one from the other.
knowing that is key, because we don't know if people are confusing other people with paul allen because they're all doppelgangers, or if the murders were all in poor, boring, bateman's head because he's lame in real life so he needs a fantasy land where he harms people.

exactly..its also a commentary on 80's materialism and egotism..the competition between males that has become predatory and at the same time benign.

objectively, "teh fountain" is at least a 9/10, but moar like 10/10. it's what i liked to call "ambiguously perfect" as in it serves multiple internally correct interpretations ala "american psycho" or "pan's labyrinth," expect the layering is more complex and tighter in "teh fountain."

yeah, and i think that the end really helps cement in that theme. when you see reagan on tv and price is dumbfounded as to how he can just lie like that, it wraps it all up- these peoples' materialism/egoism is actually killing people.

JSN, I won't argue with your rating of The Fountain because it was MUCH better than I expected. But I also found it a bit depressing so that affected my overall rating. I'm going to have to watch American Psycho again because the first (and only) time I've watched that movie, I hated it.
Speaking of multiple interpretations, everyone seems to be all over themselves about Mulholland Drive. Although I rather enjoyed seeing Laura Herring and Naomi Watts getting it on topless in a lesbian scene, that movie was utter shite. Complete horseshit.
The Aviator was pretty good. I'd give it a 7/10. I think it could have been much better. I tried to watch Down in the Valley last night, but I could only last a little over an hour into that movie. I had heard great things about it, so I gave it a shot. I don't know about anyone else, but I fucking hate people who overvalue Indie movies. With the exception of a few, most Indie movies I've seen are pretentious, long-winded, and just downright suck.
I have to agree with the poster who said that most Japanese movies/directors (outside of Kurosawa) are overrated. I tried watching Sansho the Bailiff, but it was boring. It is also true that most Asian films are very guilty of overacting. I also don't like the 'fly around, no gravity' movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, another movie I thought was overrated (but had a pretty decent story).
I didn't think the eventual movie was very good, but the 80's television show Tales From the Dark Side has been showing on the CHILL channel. That show used to scare the shit out of me when I was a kid.

I disagree completely. I think it was an imaginative study of the dreamworld and a very enthralling film.

Cate Blanchett is a disgrace to the memory of Katharine Hepburn. I'll never be able to watch that movie because of her performance.

I think that movie should have been left in the dream world, just to be honest.

I was surprised; Blanchett actually did a great acting job, although she doesn't look like Hepburn. You may want to give that movie a try, especially if you like Scorsese. I didn't even know he directed the film until his name (abruptly) appeared at the end of the movie.
I'll recommend two more movies. The Invasion of the Body Snatchers was a good 70's thriller/quasi-horror movie, with an absolutely amazing ending. The remake, The Invasion, starring Nicole Kidman, has a different ending but is not as slow as the original. Both are worth the watch. Also along the Kidman lines, I was pleasantly surprised with The Others.
