That show's actually not that bad and he's funny as hell in it.
Right now I'm watching George Cukor's The Women. Another classic from Hollywood's Golden Year.

I'm curious to see some of your guys' opinions in this thread.
Best Singular Acting Performances
I respect all of the people who post in this thread and I'm curious to see what performances you guys rank where.
Also: bad_coupon linked to my latest Classic Film thread, and despite that, it still hasn't gotten any replies from any of this thread's regulars and I have to wonder: Am I really the only one watching these films? There are so many great film minds in this thread that I find it hard to believe you guys haven't seen the classics.

hard ot give a best performance because IMO a performance is supposed to support them film, and if it's flawless it's flawless end of story.
in terms of some incredible acting performances over the years, here are a smattering:
ralph fiennes - amon goeth "schindler's list"
daniel day-lewis - william cutting "the gangs of new york"
ewan mcgregor - "big fish"
meh too lazy for more.

What? Kind of hard to get what you're trying to say here. Are you saying that since a performance shouldn't be the focus of a film, one shouldn't give it too much credence?

That's a great one. I was disappointed with Schindler's List (surely I'm harboring some resentment because I would've preferred a Kubrick Holocaust film to Spielberg's) but Fiennes' performance was without question the best part of that film.

i mean that while i might argue convincingly that a film like "wild strawberries" is a much better film than "big fish" (because it is), it's hard to say that sjoestroem's performance was better than mcgregor's. they were both magnificent performences that were flawlessly executed. it would be hard to say that mcgregor's is better because it needed a more technical stage-oriented style, or sjoestroem's was better because it was ore restrained, since that what was needed in each respective role.

Are you saying you didn't like Schindler's list as much because Spielberg was the director? Personally, I thought it was great film.

I didn't care for Big Fish at all. I know it gets a lot of praise, but I thought it was boring. Is Wild Strawberries a similar type of movie?

I like a lot of the classic films. The style isn't as over the top and filled with CGI or special effects. IDK how far you're wanting to go back though.
