So anyway, what movies of hers (ideally non comedic performances) should I watch, that make you believe she is in the top 3 of all time.
Well watching them all allows you to take consistency into consideration, and outside of Spencer Tracy, I think Katharine Hepburn is the most consistent actor of all-time, so keep that in mind.

Specifically, I consider her performance in Alice Adams (1935) the second greatest acting performance in film history behind De Niro in Raging Bull, so that'd be the best place to start.

After that, her performances in Stage Door (1937) (particularly her stage debut at the end of the film), Suddenly, Last Summer (1959), Long Day's Journey Into Night (1962), and The Lion in Winter (1968) highlight her skills well.

Well I don't think that's a great performance, so that doesn't mean anything to me.

Brad Pitt could never have pulled off Jake La Motta or Travis Bickle or Joe Wilson or Henry Drummond or Norman Thayer or Gil Carter or Stanley Kowalski or Terry Malloy or Jefferson Smith or Macaulay Connor as well as the respective actors who played the aforementioned parts.

In fact, I shutter to imagine him in some of the parts.

If you've seen the films I listed, then yes, there is a problem.

Usually, people don't include her in their lists because they haven't seen any of her films, or if they have, have only seen one or two.

When people have seen her films and they don't think she's AT LEAST the greatest actress to ever live, if not one of the greatest actors of all-time, then yeah, I have a problem understanding the thought-process.

Which films of hers have you seen?

But I have Judgment at Nuremburg and getting Adam's Rib as we speak.
At least you're taking steps to correct yourself

And keep in mind: Tracy was dying while he was making Judgment at Nuremburg and he still performed exceptionally.

i don't really care about actors/actresses in general. i much prefer the accomplishments of directors when it comes to picking up a new movie.

i've seen plenty of great actors in shitty movies and vice versa to give that much credence to them. Directors have much more consistent bodies of work.

Well you don't like old films, so I hesitate to recommend watching Spencer Tracy---the most consistent actor ever---because you probably wouldn't like the films or his performances.

In any case, I disagree with the overall sentiment express. If I like an actor, they can sometimes get me through a film I otherwise wouldn't care about.

It's a team effort though. If the acting sucks, the film most likely sucks. If the directing sucks... well you get the picture. get it? the picture.!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure but in Philadelphia Story and African Queen I couldn't stand her.
Adam's Rib shortly.

Throw a couple of Tracy-must-see-flicks Bullitt.
I need you here.
