I'm surprised I never posted in that thread.

I obviously have to give it up for Heat, but I love the Lethal Weapon series, too.

Great film from Hollywood's Golden Year. I can't wait to cover 1939 in my Classic Film threads. So many good movies came out that year it's just STAGGERING.

The Oklahoma Kid
Each Dawn I Die
The Roaring Twenties
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Goodbye, Mr. Chips
The Wizard of Oz
Dark Victory
Wuthering Heights
Gone with the Wind

John Ford's Stagecoach also came out that year and I haven't decided whether or not I'll include it. I've said that I hate both John Ford's and John Wayne's Westerns and I'd feel like a huge hypocrite talking up a film that I don't like.

Nevertheless, 1939 was a fantastic year in film history and is no doubt the single greatest year of the Hollwood studio era, hence the apt name The Golden Year.

I just watched "Wanted" and I have to say it is better than I expected. I still think James McAlvoy was miscast and someone else could have done a better job in the lead role, but I love the attitude of the movie. It does have some poor editing (i.e., short cuts and shaky cam) during a few of the fight scenes, but I enjoyed the storyline (although I guessed the big twist almost immediately).

ya, immediately after they told you!

i was genuinely taken by surprise regarding the twist. in my mind there was no guessing it, well up to a certain point.

Park is a master of the deranged...He did an amazing job framing those shots in Old Boy..

and I've seen the Dark Knight in IMAX..

Recieved tickets to an advanced screening through a friend at livenation..

It's the best movie of its genre..
Ledger is perhaps one of the top 5 movie villains in American cinema history.

^No spoilers, please! I even shut my eyes tonight at the theater when the Dark Knight trailer appeared because I hate watching previews to movies I know I'm going to see. The previews always give away too much stuff. Consider me a person who would rather go into a movie knowing almost nothing about it, that way I don't get biased one way or the other.

For instance, almost all the funny scenes in Superbad and Get Smart were in the previews. Needless to say, I thought that both were a letdown (although I must say that Get Smart was average whereas Superbad was just fucking horrible IMO).

***Slight spoilers ahead***
As for the twist in Wanted, if you're talking about the Star Wars thing, then yeah I guessed it. That's why the bullets kept hitting together when they'd shoot at each other.

I'm expecting huge things for The Dark Knight, so this is good news.

John Woo's stuff is mostly retarded, but Hard Target is seriously the goods. Vosloo and Henriksen make for a great one-two punch, as does Wilford Brimley's moustache, and it's big dumb action the way Wanted tries too desperately to be.

Seriously; who the hell killed the action movie?

You don't like The Searchers? I'm a big fan of westerns, and I generally dont like either of the Johns, but I really liked that movie. And I saw it before I knew it was supposed to be one of the best of all time.

Haven't watched that one yet.

Here are the John Ford and/or John Wayne films I've tried to watch and disliked.

Stagecoach (Ford/Wayne)
The Grapes of Wrath (Ford)
Forth Apache (Ford/Wayne)
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (Ford/Wayne)
Rio Grande (Ford/Wayne)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (Ford/Wayne)
Rio Bravo (Wayne)
True Grit (Wayne)
Rooster Cogburn (Wayne)
The Shootist (Wayne)

I still need to check out the Ford/Wayne war films to see if maybe I like those better than their Westerns. I'm hoping I'll like both In Harm's Way since Kirk Douglas is the co-star and Mister Roberts because the cast consists of Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell, and Jack Lemmon.

I've by no means watched those films for the last time, either. I'll revisit them numerous times to see if my opinion changes. As of this moment, though, I find John Ford to be the most overrated filmmaker of all-time and find John Wayne to be very dull and not captivating in the least.

I think I posted this in this thread, but even if I did, I'll say it again:

Sergio Leone>John Ford.
Clint Eastwood>John Wayne.

IMO the Searchers is much better than their other combos, and Wayne plays a different character than he usually does. I actually wrote a paper about it in college, but its been waaay too long to remember it.

I 100% agree that

Leone > Ford and
Eastwood > Wayne

Have you seen The Outlaw Josey Wales? Its not as critically acclaimed as other Westerns, but I fucking love that movie.
