into the wild was one the rare movies i actually considered ejecting the dvd and snapping the disc in half. the only thing that prevented me was the fact I would have to pay for it.

It's ok to be wrong sometimes.

Yeah Into The Wild was preachy. That's what turned me away from the movie. Good directing, pretty good acting, excellent storyline, but slow at times and very overrated. I'd still give it an 8/10 but I have no idea how someone could watch the movie and see it as "life changing."

In fact, another movie I heard about being "life changing" from many people is Y Tu Mama Tambien. I unashamedly stereotype anyone as having a life changing experience after seeing this movie as pretentious and shallow. I personally thought the movie was horse shit, but I still cannot see how someone would watch that movie and be changed by it.

PS - Bob Ross kicks ass.

I felt it necessary to share this information that I recently found available via Netflix. On Netflix you can check out the top 25 most rented movies in your local area. I thought it would be interesting to find out what movies people in my city were renting from Netflix so I checked out the list.

Here are some of my finds.
#2 on the list is Dante's Cove Season 3
"In the supernatural gay soap opera's third season, various residents of Dante's Cove find themselves gradually falling under the spell of an enigmatic dark force, while a few holdouts do their best to resist, culminating in a climactic showdown. Jill Bennett, Reichen Lehmkuhl, Jenny Shimizu and Jensen Atwood join the hit sudser's hot cast, which also includes Jon Fleming, Thea Gill and Tracy Scoggins."
#3 Feel the Noise
"When a gang of thugs threatens the life of Harlem rapper Rob (Omarion Grandberry), he's sent to Puerto Rico to live with the father he's never known. Once there, he's introduced to the sound of reggaeton and forms a group with his half brother (Victor Rasuk) and a girl named C.C. (Zulay Henao). Produced by superstar Jennifer Lopez, this musical drama is a celebration of the energy and spirit of Puerto Rico."
#7 Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007)
#22 Blade: House of Chthon (2006)
#23 Boy Culture (2006)

"A male prostitute with the enigmatic name of X (Derek Magyar) carefully avoids personal intimacy and affection, and is only interested in sex when he's being paid for it. X maintains his stoic approach to sex and love until one of his regular customers (Patrick Bauchau) tempts him to reconsider his position by sharing a meaningful story."
#24 Breastford Wives (2007)
"Taylor Wane and Glori-Anne Gilbert star in this erotic Stepford Wives takeoff. After moving to quiet Breastford, Rob and Laura are visited by the town's luscious and insatiable Women's Association. The Breastford wives' libidos are in overdrive, and Rob and Laura set out to uncover the truth … no matter what it takes. Only the town's controlling mayor knows the secret behind the ladies' wanton behavior."

The only movie I will be watching on this list is the Breastford Wives. The list speaks volumes about Orlando.

^lol. That list sounds like San Francisco, not Orlando.

The next three movies in my queue are The Assassination of Jesse James, Alien, and Sansho the Bailiff.

Here are some more movies that I'd recommend.
16 Blocks
Inside Man
Doom (although I admit that I'm about the only person who liked the movie)
Disturbia (surprisingly good)
Falling Down (only because Michael Douglas carried the movie)
Green Street Hooligans
Gangs of New York (Wild Bill, as played by DDL, is one of the most memorable characters in film history, IMO)
Hot Rod (underappreciated comedy)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Judgment Night
The Longest Yard (not a Sandler fan, but this was a good movie)
Night at the Museum (surprisingly good)
PCU (a comedy about political correctness)
The Proposition (a good Australian film. Not great, just good)
Running Scared
The Running Man (Arnold's first major movie)
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (the GREATEST B-movie ever)
Rescue Dawn
Swordfish (very underrated IMO)
The Skeleton Key (slow in places, but worth the watch)
The Smashing Machine (any MMA fan should watch this)
Signs (probably the only M. Night Shamlanananan movie that I like)
Stalingrad
Silent Hill (a very underappreciated horror flick. I loved it)
Shaolin Soccer (if you liked Kung Fu Hustle - and who didn't?, then you should like this movie as well)
Kung Fu Hustle (just because I mentioned it in the previous movie. A fantastic movie.
Top Secret! (in the same vein as the Naked Gun movies)
Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie (more of a documentary, but very entertaining)
TMNT (I loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles growing up, and I was expecting this movie to blow, but it was awesome. After awhile, you forget you're watching an animated movie)
Street Kings (if you liked Training Day, you'll like this one)
The X Files: Fight the Future

Wow; truly scary. I have not read any of this thread and was about to come in and suggest it; your post was the first thing I saw.

YES YES YES!
I caught it over Christmas and just had it come up in a class today. Great film
If you hate good film making and are a slave to the box office stay clear.

That's a decent way to look at this thread. There is however lots of love for the popular stuff if it is warranted. I've got to say that I'm going to be pretty bias when it comes to Hellboy 2, and The Dark Knight. I'm probably going to love those movies more than I should.

:vomitemoticon: @ those.

I agree though; my perspective on a movie and the filmmaking process is that any and all films have the potential to be well written and well shot. Failure to make such a film can come from those not endowed with endless corporate budgets (because they suck at it and thus won't ever get funding), and those who might otherwise be great artists who have been corrupted by a profit-maximizing lens.

With an obvious blockbuster I usually have to come to terms with the fact that the movie is a reflection of the general public, and that the general public is something I disagree with in some areas outside film and agree with in some areas; films hold true to this observation. We all like a good Star Wars or LOTR now and again, even some shitty Batman movie, but with such cake comes a slew of junk that must be tiptoed around.
