Nah, if that game is as bad as you say it is, then I'll probably never go near it. I'm not gonna touch FEAR either.

anyone have a list of the scariest/jumpiest places in a game or moments while playing a game? mine would have to be, in increasing order of scariness: (note, not a listing of the scariest games, but the scariest parts or moments while playing)

5: thief the dark project
i just remember rounding a corner in the lost city and bumping chest to chest with one of those 7 foot tall crayman guys. what a fright.

4: system shock 2
any fucking time on deck 4 when you're walking around slowly and you start hearing those cocksucking assassins making their weird sound from somewhere. then all of a sudden one or two of them dart into view at mach 25 and start kicking the fucking shit out of you. it's the worst because they kill you so quick if you don't take care of them and they're so friggin fast. when you hear that sound they make you just think 'oh fuck oh fuck..'

3: aliens vs predator
the very first level of the marine campaign. it is SO foreboding, i don't think i ever wanted not to go ahead and leave the safety of the first room so much.

2: thief the dark project
the entire return to the cathedral level is fucking TERRIFYING. the level itself is soooo creepy, and the haunts have to be one of the greatest and scariest enemies of all time. this single level is probably the single scariest concentrated 'thing' in videogame history. i remember the first time playing through it when you can't climb back up this broken staircase and have to go through this spot called st. yora's cloister. one look at the place and you have a mind to turn off the game it's that creepy.

1: half life
the original fucking half life. for all the atmosphere and effort most of the other things listed had to put in so as to scare me, the biggest scare of all time had to be this simple little fluky event in half life 1. i was about to crawl into a ventilation shaft. smashed the grate covering with the crowbar and it was totally dark. the SECOND i turned on the flashlight, a headcrab was leaping right at me. what i got when i pressed the flashlight button was a small, bright white thing flying at the screen while making that screaming noise followed by the damage sound and the flashing red damage lights, all without remotely expecting it. i just about had a fucking heart attack. without any doubt the scariest game moment EVA.

i love the nostalgia of those old games, have a mind to play em all again. anyone have similar experiences? my nostalgia needs to be satiated.

from wikipedia on shock2:

The horror element in System Shock 2 is quite pronounced; many players have found the game to be very scary. This effect is achieved by the random, mostly non-scripted movement and appearance of enemies in an environment which is often very dark and fearsome, and the vivid horror material present in many scenes. In its review of System Shock 2 as one of "The Greatest Games of All Time", GameSpot states:

"The game was scary. Damn scary. And this isn't schlocky-horror-movie-style monster-closet scary, where the bogeyman jumps out at you when you least expect it. Shock 2 projected real psychological terror through the tragic grotesquery of the formerly human enemies, the urgency and grim portent of the crew members' audio logs, and the unparalleled sound design that brought the menace and forebodingness of the Von Braun to horrible life." [1]

goddamn it rinksterk, it's 4am and now you've got me up reading about all these great old games.

weird - i have never gotten the least bit scared from a video game. In fact, the concept of real fear in a video game seems ridiculous to me.

Resident Evil 4 was the first horror game I ever played.

I originally bought it for my 7 yr old son but he wouldnt play it b/c it was to scary for him. So one night around midnight I gave it a try and was hooked. I wasnt scared playing the game alone in the dark but I must say i had some kind of feeling that had me on the edge of my seat. The music, special effects and the possibility of a zombie coming out of nowhere to cut your head was awesome. After that game I bought F.E.A.R. for my pc and really enjoyed that one too.

My little guy (8yrs old now) plays RE4 all the time and doesnt find it scary at all. Eventually you get used to it and it is no longer scary/exciting.

yeah the 'edge of your seat' feeling is what i get as well, some people actually do get scared though. like i said a buddy of mine has never been able to finish shock2. shit would be going down and he'd literally just turn off his computer in the middle of it and walk away.

The 11th Hour

My brother got game right when it came out in 1995, so of course I played it (I was 9) and it scared me shitless and induced nightmares. Now I may have been young, but it's still scary today... especially since they use real footage for the cutscenes.
