I don't know about Portuguese, I was more referring to Lozano's comment "a standard portuguese that is both brazilian and european" which sounded a little artificial to me. When speaking Spanish in both South America and Spain, I"ve always find it more rewarding to use the most "local" way of speaking, it creates a better connection with people, I think. After getting exposure to different dialects, it doesn't take any effort to switch dialcts, and it doesn't feel akward like if you used a different dialect of your mother tongue.
