It's a gamble with dvdplayers, some do some don't.
I use a modded original xbox for a media centre, (xbmc) plays avi off a data dvd (6 avi files burnt onto dvd backup style) and streams literally any media format through my network of my main rig/file server.

The program I suggested will do it all, you simply select the files, select a jpg as a title screen, set your titles menu, stick a dvd in, click the "convert" button and it encodes the files and burns your disc, on my p4 2.4ghz rig with 1gb of ram it takes about 1 hr 20 minutes to convert/burn 1.4 gb of avi.
With films that are in 2 files, you can put them on the one disc, click continuous play before you burn and it syncs the two files together, or you can stick 2 single file movies on a disc.
I make my own title screens in photoshop at 1024x768 with images of the dvd covers and the menu/title over each cover image for dual film discs, fits to 4:3 perfectly

Why is it a gamble, it says if it is compatible on the box?

Well if it says its compatible then it most certainly will play them, unless they are really poorly encoded.
With some other/older dvds, it was one of those things, where some that stated they supported avi files may not play divx, but play xvid and vice versa. I've used a modded xbox for years, never actually owned a standalone dvd player, only witnessed what friends and that have and what my downloaded movie collection has worked on. I guess a lot of the newer dvd players even the cheap ones support divx and xvid these days.
